Nice price on a fast drive, but no longer the fastest. IBM has their new 15,000 RPM SCSI drives announced last month. They state that theirs are up to 25% faster than other 15,000 RPM drives, and Seagate is the only other 15K rpm drive I have heard of. Though the Seagates still may be better than the IBM for video editing, because the seagates have the 16MB cache option that the IBM's don't. Also, I don't think the 36GB drive is yet available from Seagate, only the 18GB, IBM will have both 18GB and 36GB available this quarter (by end of March).

Specs: IBM Ultrastar 36Z15 will have average seek times as low at 3.4ms! Will be available in Ulta 160 and Ultra 320 along with Fibre Channel (though now with Ultra 320 and the price of FC controllers, I don't think it should be a consideration now)!

yeah, but you can't buy the IBM drive yet. They've just announced it (if I'm wrong, please let me know where to get one!). Also, I'd like to see an impartial review (by, say, storagereview?). If you want a 15Krpm SCSI NOW, this drive is the only game in town.

Very true. We have been waiting for the 60GXPs from IBM for over 3 months now. Its still no where in sight. Looks like we'll be waiting just as long for the new 15K rpm drives.

IDE RAID is not as fast as a single 10k RPM Ultra160 SCSI hard drive. 15k should just bury IDE RAID

IDE RAID 0 has the potential to beat the X15 in STR (Sustained Transfer Rate), although it'd have to be very good IDE drives, on a hardware RAID, and even then I don't think it would beat it all the time. As far as access time, no IDE drive, or IDE RAID configuration is capable of matching the X15. Storage Review has benchmarks on most of these drives, and they state that access time is the most important spec on hard drives.

i currently have two 75gxp 45gig ata/100's on the onboard highpoint raid controller on my abit VP6 in raid0 and its nice and fast for a desktop system. x15's are alot faster in many ways than 7200rpm ata/100 drives of any type, whether they are in a raid array or not (id have to run my own testing to see the specifics tho).

just think about x15's in raid0!

IBM 36Z15 is the sweetest hard drive on the market right now.. "just a little" too expensive though...

I think the X15 is still a better drive than the IBM and half the price. Newer isn't always better.
