Chelsea Manning on Shortlist for commutation by Obama

I do think Manning's leak was indiscriminate, but yeah -- it's clear that the sentence was intended more as revenge than justice. A commutation would strike a healthy balance between acknowledging the seriousness of what Manning did with the reality that a 35-year sentence accomplishes nothing besides more suffering.

Edit: my 2,500th post. Small potatoes next to some, but hey, it's a milestone.

Screw Bradley Manning. I really hope he succeeds in offing himself. One day. After numerous failed attempts which leave him suffering.

Talk about a security leak. This guy indiscriminately shared classified information. It wasn't because of moral outrage, but instead was likely due to job stress and not be able to cut it.

Whatever you think of what she did, her sentence is obscene. There is almost no hope that a Trump administration would consider commuting her sentence. She plead guilty, she apologized. She's been in for seven friggen years. That's enough unless you're some kind of sadist.

Hopefully he gets it. Snowden too, but I'm more skeptical that will happen. I'm rather shocked Manning is even being considered, but justice has been served already and a pardon is in order.

Glad to see you're taking the moral high ground by being both transphobic and hoping someone not only commits suicide, but commits it painfully.

Do you actually have an ounce of basic compassion for people who aren't like you, or is it just reserved for cisgender white people from Christian backgrounds?

35 years is outrageous. Proven traitors that sold state secrets for money got less time than that.

I feel sorry for him. His father was definitely a jerk. But that doesn't excuse what he did. Him being trans just goes to show the lack of judgement and unsound mind he possesses and it delegitimizes the legitimacy of any whistleblowing.

Because, let's be clear, trans is a mental illness. It isn't objectively real, it is just a manifestation of some messed up mental state. It is about as real as a tattoo is real.

I meant Manning. He wouldn't have floated that Manning was on his shortlist if he wasn't sincerely considering a pardon.

In context, "can't" just means "won't in good conscience". Obama is obviously aware of the Nixon & Rich pardons.

Yeah, I think it's like if someone told you to forgive someone and you said "I can't forgive them unless they apologize." I don't think he was saying that he didn't have the power to grant a pardon.

Can you go be awful somewhere else?

We're done here. You don't have to welcome the transgender community with open arms, but purposefully referring to Chelsea as a "him" out of spite? That doesn't make you a truth-teller, it just makes you an asshole.

Meh. There are probably people doing more time for selling crack on a street corner. Which is not to say I agree with extremely harsh sentencing at all.

I'm sorry, but take a DNA test and he's a he. And he is no hero. Him thinking he is a she goes to show how this guy was not being a truthtelling hero but a mentally unbalanced kid whose unstable home situation led him to betray his country.

Seeing how Clinton's emails arguably cost her the election, pardon Braddass over here and the Democrats become the party of security leaks with no consequences.

There's no reason for him to float this unless he's considering it. Hopefully that means that absent a strong negative reaction, he'll do it.

Well then thanks for bringing this up. I'll make sure to start up noise so he stays all 35 years. Or less, depending on if he's successful with rigging his shoelaces or bedsheets.

because DNA is the only thing that factors into development. that's why there's no variance at all between identical twins. none.

7 years in jail isn't a consequence?

There is no proof. There definitely is politics. Trannies are crazy and no one wants to actually tell these men that they can't be women because it just isn't worth the trouble, while trannies obviously are emotionally invested and so they will harass researchers until they get something favorable to their mental illness.

Please keep your unscientific bigotry, as expressed in this post and the following one, off of our forums.

of course not. Which is why if Bradass were born into a stable home situation, he'd probably be a normal non-traitor regular straight or gay guy.

Seven years is less than Jonathan Pollard served.

I agree that a commutation of Manning's sentence is in order. She's suffered enormously for her crime and it's hard to see what keeping her in jail forever will do. Snowden on the other hand I can't agree with as he hasn't seen the inside of a prison cell yet. Maybe after a few years in jail, but right away? No way.

wait a minute, hold on, if manning is actually unable to form judgment due to manning's unsound mind, then manning is unable to fully understand the implications of the activities undertaken. in which case, punishment is also delegitimized.

Seven years is less than Jonathan Pollard served.
so, rather than "no consequences," it's consequences not high enough. for someone who, you admit, is unable to form proper judgment.
