Anyone play?

I suck, but would like to have a go with anyone here. Using an app called Chess Time under jpb.

I used to play a lot, but hardly play anymore. It seems when you get in the upper echelon in skill level, not even master, it becomes harder and harder to find someone with a pretty close skill level to go against. I guy I had met and played against for hours was a big fan of the internet chess gaming, where you can play online against people rated at a similar tier. The highest ranked person that I've played against and beat was about 1850, but I've improved since then, just don't play rated games.

And to add, Juddog, you're also not sure if you're playing a human or a program at those levels. Just like how online shooters have aim bots, it's easy for someone to play off a chess program.

I use to play a lot of speed and lightning chess. 1-3 minutes. Played on bait tactics and intimidation. Not sure of the program you speak of.

I use to play. I stopped when computers got so good that I didn't stand a chance.

I still play sometimes, but these days I only seem to play because I am the faculty sponsor for our school's chess club.

Perhaps if you are one of those adults that can't find good people to play with should look up some local organizations and/or go to a local tournament.

I can beat the chess game that comes with Windows 7 at level 5 or 6. No idea if that makes me halfway decent or incredibly stupid.

I suck. Learned about 20 years ago, and I have barely played in the last 15 years.

I used to be the same way, because I thought it was a game of talent and not of skill. Really it is something that can be learned and practiced, you just have to read about strategy and over time you start to remember scenarios and experience plays a big role

I'm not that great still but I have got much much better with practice

I used to be way better as a kid, when my brain was fast enough to play lightening chess. But I still play chess for fun. The reason why I advocate learning chess, is because it teaches short term thinking seldom works in the long term. And the person who wins is the person who thought further ahead.

One of the men I worked with was state chess champion several times and regularly did something that amazed me. He would play 20 or 30 boards simultaneously. Tables would be set up in a U with him playing the side toward the inside of the U. He would simply walk around the inside of the U pausing for a moment at each board to make a move and then moving on to the next. Through the opening phase -- say the first 10 or 12 moves -- he barely paused at each board. By midgame he might stop and consider a move. By the endgame most games were over, and then he might give serious consideration to his moves. He did not win every game all the time, but my memory is that he never lost more than one or two games out of the 20 or 30. Looked effortless as he did it.

Apparently I'm really bad at it.

I beat my wife at it pretty regularly, so I thought I was at least decent. My sister in law has this new douchey boyfriend who thinks he is a chess master, he is one of those dudes who carries his chess set everywhere in this douchey chess bag. I played him on xmas and he destroyed me. It was timed which I'm not used to, but he was even "taking it easy on me", giving me tips and shit.

What a tool that guy is (no I'm not bitter that he beat me at all :awe

So now you're going to practice everyday for a year, and beat him next Christmas?

I'd be happy to play. I used to play a lot of correspondence-style games on redhotpawn, but school got in the way. Now I need to shape up again b/c there's one guy at my new work who freaking rapes me.

But it'll have to be on something that's not a mobile app since I don't have a smartphone...
