Heh, I want to present you new DC project - ChessBrain !!

What is about ?!
About playing chess online. CB (stands for ChessBrain) want to be the strongest online virtual computer in the world !! They even started a DC challenge (More info about this at http://www.chessbrain.net/dc-challenge.html).

What else info you need ?!
Program takes less computer resources. In the lowest configuration it takes only 16 MB of RAM (what a lie - this program takes only 700 Kb of my RAM !!).

Clients (called PeerNodes) are available for:
Windows (Screen Saver Version, GUI Version, Command Line Version)
Linux (Command Line Version)
MACOSX (Command Line Version)

There is also a PNMonitor (so you can see when your PN's are submitting results) - available at http://www.chessbrain.net/pnnetmon.zip

How to join TeAm ??
There is cbspn.conf file. It is simple txt file. You will find there:
# Set DC team name
teamname=

Simply, add TEAMANANDTECH after this =

It should looks like that:
# Set DC team name
teamname=TEAMANANDTECH

Save file and restart PN. Welcome in TeAm !!

What with stats ?!
Stats are only once a day updated, at 8am GMT.
Can be found here:
Team stats, Graph here

After reading this long text, I hope you will give CB even one day !! You don't lose much if you will left it for one day running !! And will help TeAm be the best !!

If you have any other questions, put them here or send me an e-mail or PM. I will reply as soon as possible !!
If you want to join, or joined arleady, please, e-mail me at moriakaice@gower.pl !!

Sounds like fun. Good luck and I hope you get lots of people to join up.

(no individual stats for the team members?)

OK, no problem.. Maybe you will like this, what CB does !!

I am currently running it along with SoB... Maybe CB run something slower (earlier submitting results every about 10 seconds, now every 20), but soB runs normally !!
So, someone else could help our TeAm at CB ?!

Will give it a try on my main machine , also a share with SoB.

Am giving it just below normal priority with 128 Mb of memory (advantage of having 1.5Gb of memory banks )
My 2100XP on 1736MHz is finding results between 1 and 10 secs.!!!

Guys,
Maybe it is a fun project to run, next to some other DC-client.
According to the website, this first CB-project is running until June/July. So a very short time.
I see the DPC are currently ranked at #13 with only 5 members. We should be able to tackle them, aren't we?

I stuck it on one machine (sharing with F@H) on mid (~36MB) memory.

-Sid

(seems like it goes quickly for a few moves (4 or 5) and then just sits there staring blankly at me )

I need someone to tell me what kind of behavior I should see from this client. watching task manager, zonealarm and the text client window,
I see a moment of activity (99%CPU, zonealarm activity and an updating text screen), then it just sits there (0%CPU, no zonealarm activity, no
text window updates).

The majority of the time, it is just sitting there doing nothing...... is this normal?

Same thing here, I does some work for about 5-30 seconds, then it sits there and my idle process is at 99% for a while.

I'm glad you are seeing the same thingy.

knowing that, I'm going to let it run overnight and see what turns up.
it will be kind of fun to do something so different on the side.

-Sid

JetBlack69, maybe you'd be interested in sticking F@H or Distributed Folding (<- my personal favorite) on that comp. so it'll have something to do while chessbrain is dormant

Same here.
Lots of activity in the beginning, then slowing down, but it seems to keep on running.
Have taken a look at the task man for some time and indeed it doesn't consume much CPU-time, not even when you set the priority to above_normal settings.
Therefore I think it is a nice client to run in conjunction with other programs.
To me it seems, it relies heavily on the amount of RAM available and not that much on CPU-speed.
Am going to let it run together with SoB, since I haven't noticed a significant drop in speed with that client.

if i recall (1 year ago is a long time!) , this was the type of behavior the old phase 1 client exhibited also , so you had to run it with another project to prevent wasting cycles

guess somebody is going to have to go snooping around the various DC forums to get the skinny on phase II

yeah, that's the ticket

(I had to spring into action when I read that dirty word.... idle in your post earlier.)

-Sid

Major upgrade at my house (hopefully) this weekend. Re-building both machines with new M0B0/CPU..... So if I get kinda quiet for a few
days, it's not that I forgot...... more likely I just broke something

Right after the builds, I'm probably gonna dedicate them both to DF 100% for 24 or 48 hours (my version of burn-in) then back to the way I have them spread out today.

Thanks!

the peermonitor thingy works great.

it looks like this client works anywhere between 4 and 10 seconds out of each minute. Is this because it is waiting for the main server?

I guess it's a good thing though, because when it is working it hogs all the idle cycles instead of sharing them.

Any description of the methodology behind it? I would be interested to know what sort of a system they're using. Are they trying to look at improving their heuristics or some other machine learning method?

Hi moriakaice, winr here.
I just joined.
I put in the space for team TEAMANANDTECH no = sign.
Is this correct?
Also, when will my stats show up?

Regards.
Richard.

How it should look in cbspn.conf file:
# Set DC team name
teamname=TEAMANANDTECH

And someone types TEAM ANANDTECH, instead of TEAMANANDTECH !! that's why we have 2 teams at team stats site !!

Will ask one of the CB-operators if he could merge the stats of those both accounts.

Have also asked in the forum for some statistics about the win/loose ratio of CB. Am curious about the progress and development of CB and if the numerous machines indeed improve the capabilities of CB. Hopefully we get an answer to that Q soon.

Have just send this msg to the support team of CB:
===============
Hi there,

I want to inform about the possibilities of merging two accounts used by the same team.
Just recently (about two-three days) we started a team (TEAMANANDTECH) to participate in your interesting ChessBrain project.
Right now, we have some 7-10 participant.

The only problem we noticed is someone who has submitted the wrong team name. As a result we now have two teams registered, where there should only be one, ofcourse.
Right now, we have TEAMANANDTECH and TEAM ANANDTECH.
The latter is the wrong one, since it has a space in between.

We are trying to locate the person who has wrongfully submitted the teamname and asking him to change it.

Hopefully you can help us out with this issue.

With regards,

Peter de Nies,
proud member of Team Anandtech,

Please review the "Stage two stats - explained" document at:
http://www.chessbrain.net/stagetwostats-explained.html

Also, we don't make it a habit to run around the net searching for people
who might have problems... so the proper place to asked questions and
communicate with our members is on our own community forum at:
http://www.chessbrain.net/bbs/

You find that there are many people willing to help! I recommend that you
post a message on *your* forum letting users know where they may find
answers to their questions:
http://www.chessbrain.net and http://www.chessbrain.net/bbs

Also, we don't recommend that people distribute our software (as packed
zips) or link directly to our downloads. The reason being that we update
our software often and remove older versions of our software. This would
cause broken links for anyone pointing directly to the files. This is
documented at the bottom of our peernode downloads page.

This is the whole e-mail I get from him. Maybe he won't be angry of quoting it here ?!

Don't like the tone used in the msg from Carlos, but it must be me.
Never mind.

I've located the TA-member with the 'wrong' team name, aka team name with space.

TitanMiller Love to have you on our tiny TA-chess team, but would you be so kind to change the team name and remove the space.
Then your results will be calculated with team ranks and we can play a nice game together. Thx.
