Much anger! I was like an hour away from buying an Asus 980 to replace my 7950..
Then I start hearing about these 380x rumors. Son of a .. guess it's back to the waiting game :\

And both of those are fine upgrades from 7950s. You'd still be looking at months of waiting for a 380X card.

I tried using Google Translate but it has issue translating the original source. Didn't see anywhere referencing these benches specifically to a 380X series. I don't think it specifies what 300 series card these are from.

should I keep looking for a cheap 290 or wait for next gen release?

ETA is 1H 2015 right?

only game I currently play that needs the GPU power is DA: Inquisition

making do with a overclocked 7850 right now and as long as I don't have a FPS overlay it's usually tolerable

The thing is that I am skeptical about GloFo's ability to do 20 nm on a big chip that quickly and still get the yield to be affordable. I suppose if they charged more than the 980 it could be OK.

Exciting stuff if true,really liking that name for the card too.:thumbsup:

Haven't seen anyone comment or even speculate how much vram this thing could have. Amd certainly has been known for slapping a bit more then nvidia on their cards so i will take a stab at 8gb.

Is there even a game at 1080p where a single card offers excellent performance while vram usage is relatively close to 4gb? Close to 4gb with typical max settings at 1440p/1600p in sli/crossfire? Guessing dual Pirate Island cards would be beast for 4k.

These numbers look possible. Wouldn't suprise me if they're real. What will Nvidia have waiting I the wings?

Besides GM200 probably nothing till 2016. They already made the first move with surprising launch prices for the 970.

Christmas would be real sweet if AMD introduce this below 600, 980 drops to 400, 970 drops to 250, 290x drops to 250, and 290 drops to 200. I would have no idea what to get =-O

i have no faith at all in this leak. Its way too easy to make this stuff up. If there is cards floating around already then there would be a ton more leaks out. If there was a new card listed in the 14.11.2 beta driver we would have heard about it.

I am not saying that there wont be a new AMD chip or that it wont be good. I just find this leak way too early and its just most likely fake. I believe many others are suspicious too, but most everyone wants it to be true. Really, just hope.

So i say, keep with your current plan of finding a good deal on a 290.

Seriously, how many really really believe this is a real leak?
Then
How many feel its most likely fake?

Come out and post your thoughts on it

Well whats the track record from chiphell on such matters?

That's the point. If the leak was from anyone else, it would be too easier to dismiss. But ChipHell was THE only site wth 3 consecutive generational leaks that were pretty damn close: Tahiti’s preview launch numbers (7950/7970) and even the most recent Volcanic Islands R200 series and Maxwell GM204 launch turned out to be quite accurate in terms of the performance numbers. Actually the GM204 leaks were underclocked engineering samples and the final cards performed even better than the leaks from ChipHell.

I think people fell for the GM 204 hype. While Maxwell is undoubtedly an awesome architecture from a perf/watt point of view, 970/980 aren't that awesome performance wise vs. 290X at high rez gaming.

If AMD bumps performance just 30-35% over 290X, you are already 15-18% faster than the 980. NV's 970/980 look really good because of the negative stigma of reference 290/290X, and because they are new tech with newer features and less power usage. As far as performance goes, they have hardly moved the bar. NV's performance also looks much better at 1080p/1200p/1440p which are the more popular resolutions.

NV hasn't even shown off the big guns. They are just milking the mid-range GM204 until they have to release 780/780Ti successors. I think 390X would need to be 25% faster than a 980 to compete favorably against the lower SKU of GM200. There is a lot more pressure on AMD with 390 series because let's face it 970/980 are really 960/960Ti.

Performance:
380X > 980
390X = 295X2
Power consumption:
380X = 280X
390X = 290

Sounds hard to believe without 20nm + HBM + very large die -- a trifecta very unlikely this early in 20nm cycle. If true, it would sell out right away.

Question about HBM. In order for the GPU to access the 4096bit memory does it need 4096-bit memory controllers (4x1024 or 8x512), or 4x256 / 8x128 due to the memory being stacked?

Yes, and it uses 8x128bit per HBM. So for 4096bit you need 32x128bit controllers.
