I'm working from home today. I tried to drive to work, but I spent about an hour on milwaukee road in the left lane waiting to turn left onto lake cook road. There was a solid backup in the left lane all the way past half day road.

I eentually gave up and got right, and made it to lake cook, I could see the eastbound traffic was motionless, so I went west and headed home. My commute is usually 45 minutes, it took me over 2 hours in the morning to not get there, but only 25 minutes to get back home thanks to lack of traffic in that direction.

A friend of mine who lives in Lisle sent me a picture of his house. He's got about 3-4 feet of water ...

I live by Lake Cook and Milwaukee and it's still pretty brutal over there. Can't imagine doing your commute during the rain. I know a few people that commuted over 3 hours from the Dundee 94 onramp to downtown.

Little bit of flooding in the far northern suburbs from the Des Plaines river (Gurnee, Waukegan)...not quite as terrible as I'm hearing in other areas, though.

I'm 30 miles southwest of the loop in Naperville which has the 2 busiest metra rail stops for commuters on the network, so I consider myself Chicago area.
Only a 30 minute train ride if I am on an express.

Is the flooding rampant around Naperville or is it more less localized to small areas?

Well, my friend from Lisle is very close to Naperville, and his house is under water.

I heard on the radio when I was stuck in traffic this morning that Downers Grove declared a state of emergency, it's pretty much bordering Naperville.

It sounds like the entire Dupage County / Naperville area got it really really bad.

Ok. Just called to check on my Grandma to make sure that she wasn't treading water. She's dry. Says that it's the Fox and Dupage Rivers are the areas of trouble.

In my neck of the woods (near Andersonville), it was a bit damp with some large puddles here and there. I had no clue it was all that bad until looking at photos on the Chicago Tribune website.

http://galleries.apps.chicagotribune.com/chi-130417-chicago-spring-flood-weather-pictures/

There's an underpass I drive by regularly on an interstate that had to have 9 or 10 feet of standing water--the bridge clearance sign said 14.x feet and there was maybe 4-5 feet of clearance above the water (see the Pratt Avenue photo in the link above). Crazy.

whoever made that gallery application should be fired.

The stranded and probably totalled cars are hilarious. How fucking dumb would someone have to be to try to drive through a foot+ of flood water?

The vast majority of people underestimate the power of Mother Nature till she kicks them in the nuts with floods, snowstorms or other weather events.

Wish I could get away with that. That's the one disadvantage to the train, you can't really take snow/rain days as everyone assumes that you can make it.

Took me 4 tries to find a route across the Des Plaines River that wasn't closed due to flooding. That's pretty typical any time we have a heavy storm though. Little water seepage in the basement, but nothing terrible.

Parents have a house on a lake in Antioch. Yard is underwater but fortunately the lake is where it belongs.

Yikes! Hope the basement drains/weeping tiles are keeping up! That has to suck. I'd be worried shitless about getting basement water issues.

I'll stop complaining about all our snow now. I rather that than flooding.

And people wonder why I choose to live where I do, at least we don't get destructive weather here.

All that cold and snow you get IS destructive. Pipes freezing, that frost line or whatever when the ground freezes, all that crap.

That's minor compared the lot of people losing their entire homes though. Pipes only freeze if there is no heat or code violations such as pipes behind insulation. Typical common sense stuff.

Ground freezing is not really an issue except for sub par construction like making a foundation or pier that is not below frost line. Even then you might get some cracking and movement but you normally don't lose the structure completely.

Was in for a funeral. It was a MESS to get around. But we managed. Day of the wake I was down in basements helping with water removal.

Cool thing... my Grandfather (who is the one who passed) said that the day he died there would be so many people crying that Chicago would be under water.
