Always risky signing a big contract to a player who hasn't played one game in the majors especially when that player is coming off an injury. Fuku is supposedly pretty darn good but so was Hideki Matsui and he never replicated his Japanese numbers (though he had one great year). I read somewhere that he'll more of an Aaron Rowand type of player which isn't so bad.

I'm interested in seeing how Fukudome fares especially at Wrigley which is no easy task for any fielder.

...but those two other players or Ichiro and Hideki Matsui, two of the most popular Japanese players in the MLB.

I hope Fukudome is able to come over and succeed next year.

Ichiro hmmmpfffftttttttt

Ichiro is a godly, one of a kind player.

If this guy gets anywhere near Ichiro the Cubs got a steal.

Oh and I love Ichiro.

The question is, if he doesn't perform, how much money is he going to make the team?

The Cubs don't need him to be a stud if he wants up making them millions in merchandise and other areas.

fuck him. actually i cant really fault him as my team cant afford to get into a bidding war with a top 10 media market team, but i guess us making the second biggest contract offer in franchise history wasnt enough for him. i was just hoping with the fact that we've been scouting him since high school and a ringing endorsement from outska would be enough for him to ignore a few million dollars more a year and come over here.

im frustrated more than anything. our outfield has so many holes right now and he would've been a nice addition both with his glove and bat, which we also desperately need. now it looks like were going to be settling with some end-of-the-career vet and pray for a breakout year. but its cool, no hard feelings towards the cubs. especially since we're looking at prior and tomorrow could possibly be deal day.

edit: daaaaaaaaaaaaammmmmiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiit

I'm sure he'll produce better than Jacques Jones ever did for the Cubbies.

Let's see, the Padres have Brian Giles, and uhh....Scott Hairston? Oh crap, we're screwed. Well, at least they locked up Peavy until 2012 with a club option for 2013. The Wolf signing could be a good move as well and I don't know if Iguchi will make much of an impact, but anyone is better than M. Giles.

i agree. not to mention it looks like we may give antonelli a shot at second also. they think he's ready for the show and he's one of our best prospects. b. giles is in his last year and so we'll have another outfield hole again next year. but giles, despite his great obp, wasnt the power bat we had originally hoped for when we locked him up. add to the fact that his speed isnt the greatest but i guess something is better than nothing. it appears now we are going to try cameron again (who wont be around the first month) and/or geoff jenkins. lovely.

Yeah, say it just right and it sounds like a sci-fi brothel.

But seriously, the Cubs NEED MORE CONSISTENT PITCHING. Zambrano and Lilly were never decent at the same time, and going to the bullpen was like playing Russian Roulette... Howry and Marmol were okay, but Dempster is terrible.

If everyone stays healthy next year, I think the Cubs will have a decent chance to win the division. Ramirez, Lee should be decent, but they need other players to get on base to get RBI opportunities.

I dunno though, the Brewers look pretty good, except for Eric Gagne- what the hell were they thinking?!

The Cardinals -- They do have Pujols, but everyone else is getting OLD.

I don't think you need to worry about the Astros and Pirates, they just aren't that good right now.

Our owner has plenty of money, he just doesn't like to spend it because he doesn't really want to win. Even the Marlins try to win every few years for goodness sakes.

We especially have more cash now that AROD opted out, we were paying him $7 mil a year (3rd or 4th highest on our team).

Really only Kevin Millwood, Padilla (God that was a bad signing), and Michael Young make any money on our team. Even Blalock isn't high-dollar right now. There is NO reason we shouldn't have one of the 3 great center fielders that already went off the market.

If we can actually get some pitching that would redeem the owner and GM but I don't see that happening.
