Tokyo is out now, too. Madrid and Rio still in contention, both are great locations but I would love for it to go to Rio. Spain got Barcelona as a site before.

Just because it was originally a case of obama not going to copenhagen in order to focus on health care. I don't think anyone expected chicago to go down so quick...

I loooove Rio, but Madrid is a great place, too. I was there a month ago and they were doing a huge amount of construction.

I may not be a politician, and I don't know if he did it, but I would have met with king of Spain, PM of Japan and Pele whilst they are all at Copenhagen.

We have a winner, people. No need for IOC president Jacque Rogge to use his vote and that means everyone - well, everyone except the Madrid and Rio delegates of course - can relax. The announcement ceremony kicks off at around 1730 BST, with the host city for the 2016 Olympic Games expected to be announced before 1800.

I thought Chicago would get this purely for money reasons. United States television coverage of the Olympics is never higher and the revenue is never better than when the USA hosts the Olympics.

The committee may have seen Rio as a reasonable alternative because at least the the time zones line up with the USA.
