So while all the faux outrage about children at the border who being fed, clothed, and housed, nobody talks about one of the crappiest cities (let alone states in IL) where kids are getting gunned down every.single.day. Yes, children. 60 total to be exact this year, 67 last year at this time, and 65 the year before that.

The month of June began in Chicago with three children 15 and younger shot over three days. It ended with five kids shot over a weekend.

So far this year, at least 61 children have been hit by gunfire in the city. That's close to what it was at this time in 2016 and 2017, when violence in Chicago reached near-record levels, according to data kept by the Tribune. In 2016, at least 65 children were shot by July 1. Last year, it was 67.

In the past month, an 11-year-old boy was found shot in the head on the bathroom floor of his Far South Side home; a 12-year-old girl was killed as she was carrying a baby cousin into a relative's home on the West Side; and a 14-year-old boy was gunned down by someone in a passing car near Washington Park.

The 14-year-old, Lucian Paige, was slain Saturday in the middle of a weekend that was particularly violent for children.

"These kids can't live, they can't play, they can't do nothing," a relative said Monday.

She said Lucian was "just a kid, a regular kid" who was close to his sister, who is a year younger. "Very, very playful," she said. "He was a smart kid ... but they wanted to grow up so fast."

Nine hours earlier, another 14-year-old boy was shot in the Loop. He was coming up stairs at the corner of Wabash Avenue and Wacker Drive when he was shot in the leg, police said.

Then late Sunday night, three girls, ages 5, 14 and 15, were shot while sitting in a parked car with their mother in the East Garfield Park neighborhood, police said. Three other people were injured in the attack, which police said was gang-related.

I have a friend who lives in one of the worst areas of Chicago (Englewood) and he said it's really that bad. He said the other night he got out of his car, and two stray bullets whizzed by his head. He also said detectives won't even investigate a single murder, usually only if there's more than 1 in a certain area. WTF? When did things get this bad in a major US City?

Everyone knows that Chicago has some of the nation's toughest gun laws, and it does zilch to curtail the gun violence. We know that some of the guns are coming from out of state, but that only amounts to around half of the guns. That makes me think it's either a cultural, economic, or both issue. Is Trump right - if these kids all had jobs and a purpose, would they be doing this crap? If it's cultural, what can we do as a society to fix it? What are your thoughts?

Trump said he was going to fix the problem, why hasn't he? Why does he care about kids crossing the border more?

Tough gun laws don't stand a chance when your neighbor has lax laws. Also citation needed for your claim of around 50% coming from out of state.

https://www.npr.org/2017/10/05/555580598/fact-check-is-chicago-proof-that-gun-laws-don-t-work
A 2015 study of guns in Chicago, co-authored by Cook, found that more than 60 percent of new guns used in Chicago gang-related crimes and 31.6 percent used in non-gang-related crimes between 2009 and 2013 were bought in other states.
Average the 60 and 31.6% = 45.8%.

Since only half are coming from out of state on average, that means the current tough gun laws in IL aren't getting it done. That is why I said I think it's more likely attributed to other factors like cultural and/or economical.

Well technically there should be a lot more jobs opening up if they haven't already. We know that the midwest has 180,000 vacant jobs (and that would be if everyone working-age found a job) so maybe Trump should create a relocation program that can move some of these troubled gang members into a job. That would require them going under 6 hours west of Chicago to Iowa. What do you think of such a program? Trump would be hailed as a hero for solving the Chicago gun problem. The main obstacle would be funding and finding a place to build housing within a bus stop's range of these jobs. Another solution for these vacant jobs would be... you guessed it, illegals. While they're waiting for their hearings, put them work. If they can learn english well enough to communicate and are a good fit for the job, then they get to stay. Both problems solved, business thrives and puts at risk kids to work plus illegals. Kills two birds with one stone, businesses are happy, people aren't murdering each other, illegals get an alternative way to an h1b visa since it's harder to deport.

I'm guessing if you took that 50% off the streets it'd drop the gun violence numbers way down.
Yes, but how much is too much? Therein lies the problem - Only bordering states? What about states that border on bordering states? Because gangs can still easily pool their resources to get them even 3-6 hours away. For example, I had a college acquaintance who used to drive a long way to NY to pick up marijuana bricks to sell. It would take him the whole weekend to get there and come back. Criminals gonna criminal, man. It may cut down a small percent but I doubt it would do much.

that why we need a national ban on guns.

Actually we don't. The kids need work. What did Obama do for Chicago besides lip service? Isn't Rahm Emanuel the mayor? So 10 children a month are getting gunned down in his city, ever month, for the past 3 years right? WTF. That's nuts. Is this city so corrupt that they can't get together to solve this?

Interesting bit of info. Chicago doesn't even make the top ten of the most dangerous cities in the US. Apparently it's #18.

So, are we worried about the 17 more dangerous cities as well?

I'm very surprised that Seattle didn't make that list. There seems to be shootings in the news daily. NOT surprised to see Tacoma on the list...or Stockton, Modesto, or Sacramento. (although I AM surprised to see Modesto so high on the list)

Even for the big spike in 2016 the murder rate didn't touch what is was in the late 80s and early 90s. Rate has also been on the decline for the last 15 straight months due to police shifting tactics and more use of data. The perception around here is that after cops got caught doing bad/questionable things (notably the 2015 Laquan McDonald incident) that they sat on their asses for basically all of 2016 like petulant children instead of doing their jobs. I find it hard to argue with that assessment from what I've seen.

Not sure how you think corruption figures into this since, while existing, it has little to do with this particular issue.

Also, this:

I dont actually think you care about minority kids.

We can blame Kim Foxx for majority of crime increase, she refuse to press charges so many time. Did you know Chicago have a no-chase policy for the cpd.
