This is truly a sad day for all sports fans. Chick had the class that's so sorely missing from professional sports. He will never be forgotten among Laker fans. The team needs to go out for an unprecedented 4-peat now.

I am sorry for being very ignorant in a time like this and I don't watch any sports but who is Chick Hearn? I'm sorry to hear he died but what did he do? It sounds he was a big influence in the Lakers or something.

Dig around on the web and you should find a bunch of info. He was the announcer for the Lakers for uncountable years. He announced thousands of games in a row before he had to take time off for heart surgery. His health just went down from there.

RIP Chick.

He had a wonderful life doing the thing he wanted to do most, and he did it the best. To be loved and remembered by so many is a tribute most of us will never attain. We where honored by his presence in this life. He has now gone on to continue for eternity a life with his Father in Heaven, a gift from the Son of God, through the attonment.

He is gone, but will never be forgotten.

We should all be so lucky just to live to see 85.

He was the greatest announcer to ever live. He had the longest streak of not missing a game. He also had a huge part of getting the Lakers from Minneapolis to LA.

Probably one of, if not the best sports announcers ever. He called 3338 consecutive Laker games, starting in 1965, and ending in December 2001 when he took time off to have heart surgery.

He coined many phrases that are now in regular use in basketball, like"slam dunk," "no harm, no foul," "finger roll," "air ball."Chick was a great guy, as good a friend to the opposing team's players, as he was to the Laker players. Some announcers are complete homers, not Chick. He would be the first to praise the opposing team on a job well done, and the first to criticize the Lakers on bad play.

He always took time to talk to the fans, and never refused an autograph. When you heard a game broadcasted by Chick, you weren't just listening to it, you were seeing it like you were really there, they called that the "word's eye view." The man was Laker basketball, and was a treasure to Laker fans, to the game of basketball, and to sports in general. Many broadcasters out there today are just doing Chick Hearn impressions. He was the greatest. Rest in peace Chick.

That was truly beautiful. Well said.

Chick was loved in the basketball community.

From a Rocket's fan:

Couple of years back I was at a Rockets/Lakers game fairly early and both teams were in shoot around. Some frail guy walks out of the tunnel and at about mid-court Francis approaches him and begins talking. Mobley joins them. I am in the upper deck, but you could tell it was a real conversation. Francis kept putting his arm around him and such. Goes on for about five minutes. I am wondering who this is, as Francis and Mobley are hanging all over him. The only other time I saw anything like this was when Lenny Wilkins came on. Virtually every Rocket came by and said hello, Rudy did that two hand shake thing, and wouldn't let go till the got to the Hawk bench. The Refs also came up and gave their respect to Wilkins. It was like a scene from The Godfather.

Finally the conversation ends and the frail guy begins to slowly walk away, and Francis runs over and begins to clear a chair out of the Lakers "bench", so the guy can cut through and not have to walk all the way around the bench. The chairs were tied together or something, and Francis and Mobley both begin directing traffic and everybody near by drops what they are doing and starts to help with this project. I figure this guy must have some pull, so I keep an eye on him. He goes and sits in the Laker press section. Suddenly it dawns on me, that must be Chick Hearn, I have heard he is well respected.

I gome home and make it a point to watch a Laker game on the dish. Chick Hern is great. I mean great. He says it like it is. Not Bill Walton "contriversial" like it is. He just says very insiteful things about both teams. He is clearly a Laker fan, but disses the team when they are not playing up to their capabilites. As a guy who has seen about 65 Rocket games on tv a year for the last 4- 5 years, I learned several new thing about the Rockets and players from Hearn. He is great. And will truley be missed. Wish I had discovered him sooner.

Well said, trmiv.

Great story, SirDante.

I still can't believe it. Lakers games will never be the same again.

*sigh* I remember being told to go to sleep early and stop watching TV about 10 years ago during the Lakers season, but I wouldn't care. Chick Hearn on the radio painted such images of the game in my mind that it felt like I wasn't only watching the game, but I was courtside and part of the game.

I remember being stuck in traffic during the 2002 playoffs, and Devean George made a bad play, and Chick said, "That was not a Phi Beta Kappa play." Little chick-ism's like that really made the game what it was. I don't think I'll ever be able to listen to AM590 the way it used to be.

Jesus. Do a quick search on Chick Hearn on eBay and about 100 items have popped up over the last 12 hours.

That, and his unbiased play by play, are what made him head and shoulders above the rest. Back in the 80's when the classic Laker/Celtic rivalry was peaking, the channel broadcasting the NBA Finals at the time played a few minutes of the radio broadcast from each side. The Boston guy was supposed to be a legend and Chickie made him sound catatonic. TV announcers just don't come close. Marv Albert says "yes", but Chick tells you where the guy was on the floor, which hand he used, the type of shot, whether there was a guy defending him, etc. Sometimes he'd even tell you his shoe size, or what he had for breakfast
