USGS says it's an 8.8 which is 16 metric gigatons worth of TNT's and the Haiti quake was a 7 which is .032 metric gigatons of TNT (wolfram). That is massive. Luckily it was more than 20 miles underground, where the Haiti quake was only 8 miles down.

The damage will not be local to only Chile, the Tsunami warnings are already out to the entire Pacific Ocean. So this earthquake could be international in scope, with various estimates that it may effect up to 1/3 of the entire planet earth.

Thoughts and prayers to the Chilean people, that is terrible. Hopefully, there will not be a tidal wave of any significant damage.

That is massive. Luckily it was more than 20 miles underground, where the Haiti quake was only 8 miles down.

I am not familiar with earthquakes, how much does the depth dampen it?

Live reporting online...
http://www.cnn.com/audio/radio/cnntv.html

8.8 is just huge.

6 deaths reported so far.

Ya its a big one by recent history standards. . I am reasonably sure that were all going to experience even bigger ones this year. I see at least a 10.2 for the US this year . Changing were the source of the Mississippi begins . Lake superior will be the new source and the river itself will be hugh beyound most peoples comprehension. . Its hard times we live in but people have made their choices and the the the fruits of those choices bare witnessing. May God have mercy on the righteous. The water barer is among you .

Death toll should be pretty small at least, luckily. The infrastructure of that area is built to handle it.

Somewhat to my surprise, this quake hit in the same exact area of the earlier 9.5 magnitude quake in 1960. The 1960 quake involved a 650 mile rupture and this one is only a 400 mile rupture. Worse yet, its underwater and much of the fault movement has been vertical, the worse case scenario for tsunami generation. With fault movement amounting to some 3.5 inches a year, the intervening 50 years could store up some 14.5 feet of vertical fault movement, with the wave due to hit Hawaii at 4 pm EST.

Usually cities hit by prior major earthquakes will be comparatively safe for a century or more, but Chile seemingly plays by its own rules.

Earthquakes, mudslides and snowstorms, OH MY! Tsunami, floods and endless destruction, OH NO! Did I mention the East Coast hurricane winds, bankrupt snow funds and power outages?
Not to belittle the disasters, but 2010 seems to have a good start on them.

last I heard they were expecting more like 10ft waves, will still probably kill some idiot surfers though because a 10ft tsunami wave acts nothing like a 10ft normal wave.
