You can make beans and someone can have beans with their chili, but you don't make chili with beans in it. That isn't chili.

Beans in chili? What's next?! Ground beef?! Real men don't put those things in their chili; they would rather cut their arm off instead! Everyone knows this.

I resisted this thread the entire time...but now I see that you guys are missing the OP's point entirely.

This is not a thread about opinion. A "chili" is a pepper. "Chili con carne" is Spanish for "chili peppers with meat."

Americans started calling it "Chili" ...but that's INCORRECT. That's the same as calling it "pepper."

I wouldn't say "make me some potato" when I mean "make me some beef and potato stew!"

Basically, "chili" contains seeds, water, and capsaicin...but not beans. It also doesn't contain beef.

A beef & chili stew may or may not contain beans.

I AM WINNAR!!

Just because you lack the knowledge to know that chili doesn't contain beans, does not mean that chili contains beans.

And just because you lack the knowledge of what to do with a vagina doesn't mean you're not male.

Who the hell puts chili on a hot dog?

Hot dogs have dijon mustard, chopped onions, and maybe relish and/or sauerkraut. No chili and no damn ketchup, either.

Sucks none of you can taste my amazing chili. It's only half way done, but it's coming along nicely. Low till 1 am then fridge for the night. Tomorrow night will be mmm after some more of the liquid evaporates and it thickens up.

I know people who refuse to eat Chili if it has any meat in it. They're Frijole con Chili purists.

90% of people prefer/think of chili with beans. The rest of you are clinging to an arbitrary antiquated definition.

QFT x10000, I have a stupid fucking neighbor who we fight about this on a constant basis. Then last week we went to a pizza place down town that by default makes their pizzas white. I already knew they did, but he didn't, and he didn't read that part of the menu and was like "WTF there's oil and no tomato sauce on my pizza!" He was acting like somebody had slapped his wife. I brought up our Chili fights and he said it wasn't the same. I think next time I see him I'm going to stab him in the Larynx with my Titanium Spork. I wish a law was passed that made people who served chili with beans to have to specify on the menu. Most places I ask the server goes "gee, I don't even know, let me go ask..." in fact pass a law that requires them to call it something totally different so when I see chili on the menu I know it doesn't have beans in it and there's no mix up when a server tells me "no beans" and my fucking Chili Cheese Fries are covered in disgusting ass beans. I should take my Titanium Spork with me everywhere so I can stab these incompetent servers too.

Umm... Chili is serioz business!?

That's like saying "pumpkin soup doesn't have curry powder in it". Maybe your pumpkin soup doesn't, but you're not the king of all pumpkin soup. Good chilli has beans in it.

I can't claim to even remember the last time I had pumpkin soup, though I do remember liking it, but some how curry power sticks out as an odd ingredient. I could be entirely wrong though.

Got some statitstics to back that up? 7/10 places I go that have chili on the menu it's no beans. Every single fast food place I go to that has it, there's never beans. And in every supermarket by me they have a bigger variety of Con Carne (real chili) than the bullshit with beans. And The Wick Fowler chili kit I bought this evening to make chili, the instructions on the box do not list beans.

I'm not very fond of pumpkin, but I had some pumpkin bisque a few years back that was seriously amazing.

Lol.

The only fast food chain I can think of that has chili is Wendy's and they have beans.

I don't need statistics, I have spelling and delicious beans.

The reason beans aren't a part of chili is very simple. Chili was created with the intention of using beef as cattle was plentiful in San Antonio. When people got a hold of the recipes in different parts of the country as it filtered out of San Antonio, beef was more expensive so they substituted beef with a perfectly healthy alternative, beans. Beans are not supposed to be in chili as chili has beef. Vegetarian chili would substitute beef or the other meats with beans, but that fundamentally changes the dish. If you like beans you could always make the beans on the side and add them after the chili has been cooked.
