China Bars American Gold Medalist Active on Darfur

The Chinese government is barring an American Olympic gold medalist who has criticized China's policies toward Darfur from traveling to Beijing for the Olympics. In a statement sent to reporters via e-mail, the former Olympian, William "Joey" Cheek, said he was scheduled to fly to China today, but an official from the Chinese Embassy in Washington called last evening to advise him that his visa, issued a few weeks ago, had been canceled. Mr. Cheek, who won the gold in speed skating in 2006, said the diplomat said he was not obliged to give a reason for the cancellation.

"I am saddened not to be able to attend the Games," the athlete said. "The Olympic Games represent something powerful: that people can come together from around the world and do things that no one thought were possible. However, the denial of my visa is a part of a systemic effort by the Chinese government to coerce and threaten athletes who are speaking out on behalf of the innocent people of Darfur."

Activists such as Mr. Cheek, who heads an athletes' group called Team Darfur, have pressed China to use its influence over Sudan to bring an end to the genocide in that country's Darfur region. However, China has largely deferred to Khartoum on the issue and has vigorously denounced efforts to link the conflict to the Olympics.

"I still remain convinced of the great role the Olympics can play as a force for promoting peace around the world, including in the still raging crisis in Darfur," Mr. Cheek said. "Yet, despite the fact that I've always spoken positively of the Olympic ideal, and never called for a boycott or asked an athlete to break an IOC rule, my visa was revoked less than 24 hours before my scheduled departure."

Yes, if you are against genocide you are clearly an enemy of the Chinese people.
I guess its true:
1936 Berlin ='s 2008 Beijing.
Why is America even trading with this murderous, barbarous, slimey, disgusting, (fill in blank) gang of thugs who are keeping 1.2 billion people as slaves?

Exactly, "1936 Berlin ='s 2008 Beijing"! And China will dig a tunnel to invade Poland very soon! Warsaw is in danger!

How do the China apologists, the ones who whine that the games shouldn't be 'political' explain this one?

From another article about the same story, this guy isn't even participating in the games. China is well within their right to cancel his visa and deny his entry. The U.S. does it all the time. No biggie.

So we've got a former Olympic athlete who wants to use the Olympics to promote his personal political agenda (not that it's a bad one).

And the Chinese deny him entrance for their own political agenda (trouble-free Olympics).

Pot meet kettle?

I find some irony here, and do not like the games politicized.

I find myself unable to symphathize.

This is a good point. If it's political, China wouldn't have the games, but they are making it political with this, aren't they?

Does he? I skimmd the article quickly. If he does, tough sh*t for him, but if not, then they were over the top.

This phrase is what gave me that idea and changed my initial impression to that of non-sympathy:

"I still remain convinced of the great role the Olympics can play as a force for promoting peace around the world, including in the still raging crisis in Darfur," Mr. Cheek said

And no, the sentence after that doesn't plainly enough indicate that he was going ONLY as a spectator.

I wouldn't be surprised if there is more to the story. I wouldn't be surprised if the Chinese embassy tried to get him to agree not to protest etc, and he wouldn't.

He belongs to some "Save Darfur" organization and I think China suspected he was planning on going over there and doing some sort of protest.

the games always have and always will be political. That was their purpose, to be a national dick-waving contest, or in the context of the times: a city dick-waving contest.

This is from the thread in OT:

http://sports.yahoo.com/olympi...post/Chi?urn=oly,98718

Chinese officials don't need a reason to revoke anyone's visa but, in their eyes, they had plenty of reasons to snatch Cheek's. He is the founder of Team Darfur, a group of 70 athletes whose goal it is to raise global awareness of the human-rights violations taking part in the Darfur region of Sudan. China's military, economic and diplomatic ties to Sudan have been well-publicized in the lead-up to the Games.
...
Cheek was going to China to support the athletes on Team Darfur -- including soccer player Abby Wambach -- and to promote the cause, one that he has championed for years. After winning gold in the Torino Games, Cheek announced he was donating his $25,000 USOC bonus to Darfur and implored his sponsors to do the same.

If he were a participant, this would be an issue, but he's not.

While I can appreciate its a politically sensitive issue, Mr. Cheek has qualified for the US Olympic team on athletic ability and the USA should be the sole arbiters of the athletes they send.

I would hope that GWB would have the backbone to say to China, in exchange for a US guarantee that Mr. Cheek will not polities his stance on Darfur during the Olympics, you damn well better let him in or the US will withdraw from the games.

I listened to Mr. Cheek being interviewed on the radio, he is anything but a hothead wanting to make this into a huge political issue. But as a US citizen, he has every right to have a stance on world issues.

In MHO, what China is doing is simple outrageous, and a blot on the Olympic games.

You realize though that politicization of the events is part of olympic history?

Germany in 1936, Mexico City and black Power in 1968, Israeli Palestinian conflicts appearing in 1972 Munich, America boycotting Olympics in Russia in 1980 and then the payback boycott in 1984. Umm....the Olympics have ALWAYS been politicized. and those are what i quickly thought without delving into actual links and read the details.

Haha! Good riddance. You don't think anything is gonna happen if you go into China for the sole reason to protest and try to humiliate the government?

"WWAAHHHH! Oh they won't let me in to protest and try to humiliate the government." NO FREAKING DUH!!! Where has this guy been the last 50 years. Dipsh*it.

He should be thankful he didn't get to protest, otherwise he would have gotten smacked around by the locals, police, or both.

Pew Global Attitudes Project this spring and issued last month found that an astounding 86 percent of Chinese said they were content with their country?s direction, double the percentage who said the same thing in 2002. Only 23 percent of Americans polled in the survey said they were satisfied with their country?s direction.

Happy? In China?..... does.... not.... compute...... I though they were all in forced labor camps being whipped to work 28 hour days.

I'm sure that the British will do the same thing in 2012 to anti-inbreeding activists protesting against the royal family.

I don't see what the big freaking deal is....

Obviously he's not taking part in the SUMMER games nor does he have any connection to it. He's been blacklisted in immigration (like the US doesn't do that) probably till next month when the games are over.

Then he could go in as he wishes and do whatever....

So in summary, what's the big deal again?

Wow. First off you believe a poll taken in a Communist dictatorship?
Second, without a free press no poll is valid.
Third, I bet a poll in Nazis Germany in 1939 showed a 99 percent approval rating.
Fourth, anyone who would believe such a poll, would probably believe the poll of American slaves taken in the South in 1860. Overwhelmingly approving thier slavery.
