I am obviously against torture, but I am not morally opposed to a dog meat eating festival on principle.

Still, it's not like an either/or thing. What China is doing (to dogs) is terrible, just like what the US is doing (to dogs) is terrible.

that's fine until you consider that we are euthanizing dogs 365 days out of the year across all 50 states.

When I told my Indian counterparts that, they were fucking appalled. Let's not pretend the way a shelter dog gets put down is a pleasant experience either.

Is it really economical to pick a dog up off the street, crate it and then ship it 1,200 miles to be slaughtered for food? Getting dogs to make more dogs is pretty damn easy, although I guess you do have to feed them.

I love dogs so I really don't want to read anymore than I have to but are they being slaughtered like other livestock or is the issue just that they eat dogs that we see as pets? If it's the latter, and again I personally think it's disgusting, who am I to judge another's culture? Some cultures worship cows yet I still eat the fuck out of a steak, burger, ribs, meatballs, beefy mac & cheese, hell darn near anything made with beef. I guess they could protest me if they wanted to but absolutely zero fucks would be given by me.

That is the real issue here, the treatment and outright torture of the animals.

Perhaps he was browsing with small children that he didn't wish to see the pics, or maybe he was at work and didn't want to subject his coworkers to them, or his wife was in the room and has a weak stomach, etc...

We courteously use the NSFW tag for a good reason and it's also the forum rules, again for very good reason. Even if it wasn't the rules it's called not being a dick, something that you might want to take a lesson in yourself. You having a bad day or something, you are usually a tad more courteous.

I have 2 dogs and love them dearly, but bashing someone else's culture because of how we were raised is only something that comes out the mouth of stupid Americans. It's worth noting that strong protests and citizen action against this dog-eating festival and the very practice of eating dogs itself is being carried on by Chinese citizens living in China . . . people who have lived their entire lives in this . . . other culture.

Animals Asia founder and CEO, Jill Robinson MBE said:

“Our investigations strongly point to what everybody familiar with the industry has long suspected – that the vast majority of China’s dog meat comes from stolen companion animals and that misinformation and illegality is rife at every stage of the industry supply chain.”

In Jiaxiang County, Shandong, considered one of the country’s most active dog-raising areas, investigators found scant evidence of industrial-scale dog breeding for consumption.

While more than 100 dog farms listed online gave the impression of a thriving industry, in reality many alleged dog farms were actually the same entity with different titles, while none had more than 30 adult dogs on site.

Thirty-five Chinese Animal Charities have put their name to an open letter requesting animal rescuers no longer buy dogs at the Yulin dog meat festival.

With international and local media coverage of the festival growing each year - more and more animal lovers are travelling to Yulin with the intent of saving animals. Unfortunately, say the NGOs, they are now becoming part of the same dog black market they are trying to end.

The letter (translated in full below) says the actions are counterproductive and raises dog meat industry profits. In addition any rescuers would be paying an inflated price that could rescue more dogs elsewhere. It's suggested that local Chinese travelling to Yulin would be better advised to save dogs in their own area.
