http://world.time.com/2013/11/13/china-to-philippines-here-have-a-measly-100000-in-aid/?hpt=hp_c2

An excerpt:

"The U.S. has promised $20 million in aid for victims of Supertyphoon Haiyan in the Philippines and has mobilized an aircraft carrier for the relief effort. Britain is also sending a warship and has pledged $16 million. The Vatican is dispatching $4 million, Japan $10 million and New Zealand $1.7 million. And China, the world’s most populous nation and second largest economy?

It’s handing over $100,000."

Really sad ...

Since when did China do anything for anyone besides maybe North Korea?

Technically, that's like U.S sending 100k, since we borrow all their money.

that's a message to Philippine. It is like tipping a waiter you don't like, you don't want to tip to start with, but here is 1 cent as an insult.

Where did the US get $20 million from? Not too long ago the gov't was short on money and the politicians couldn't agree where to cut the budget and had to shut down the gov't.

I'm pretty annoyed the U.S. government has 20 million laying around in funds to give out. Aren't the US trillions of dollars in debt? Oh well, what harm would another 20 million do... I think the rationale behind the U.S. government is "ah... this money issue will solve itself in the future when all the present politicians are dead already". Annoying as hell!

This is an insult

This year's budget is $3.45T, now let's put that in perspective for your idiot brains.

$20,000,000
$4,500,000,000,000

We donated .00044% of our GDP to a developing nation that just had several thousand people die in a natural disaster. OH THE HUGEMANATEE HOW WILL WE EVER PAY FOR GRAMS' MEDICARE NOW?

Our $900B budget deficit does desperately need fixing, but $20M is .0022% of our budget deficit. I'm not saying $20M doesn't matter, but I am saying that we could flip the bird to every country in need and we would barely make a dent in the deficit.

africa got a lot of chinese money

I've spent a lot of time in Africa. The Chinese government comes there, pays the corrupt politicians a penny or two, and then strip mines the whole joint and cuts down all the trees. It's terrible. They are not doing Africa any favors.

yep, it's just a rehash of the European exploitation of that continent in the past.

Politicians are like teenagers that haven't figured out how to balance a checkbook yet, as long as they are talking thousands or millions they could care less. . . They only worry about billions and trillions.

You'd have a point if the US was still isolationist.

You have to look at it from a Chinese standpoint. 100k is a lot of money to hand over to their maids. That's like the loose coins they find in the couch that they can keep.

In the meantime Chinese are going to grab some islands for themselves.

In the grand scheme of things it's not a lot of money, sure. But considering all of the problems our own people are facing, it seems wrong to me that we're giving money to someone else. I get the whole "helping your fellow man" thing, but we should be helping ourselves first. The number is irrelevant, it's the principle.

Hell if they want to get into fiscal soundness, chances are that helping the Philipines will help American industries as I'm sure there's at least a few that are seeing setbacks due to this, probably more than $20 million worth even.

Of course there's lots of other reasons as well.
