Looks like the Chinese Government might have gotten a bit too much negative press for donating only the $100K:

"Update, Nov 14, 01:40 ET: Chinese media reported on Nov. 14 that China was sending an additional $1.64 million in supplies to Haiyan

If you speak or read Chinese, you'll be able to spot the double meaning embedded in that amount of money. A literal fuck you to the Philippine government

I don't speak or read Chinese. Can you 'splain it to me?

Hey one hundred dolla lot money for Chinese.

How much did you donate?

To put it into perspective for you. $100,000 = 1/1,000,000th of a percent of China's GDP.

If I donated an equal amount of my annual income that would be about 1/1000th of a cent (if I did the math right). In any case, it's a miniscule amount.

In the grand scheme of things it's not a lot of money, sure. But considering all of the problems our own people are facing, it seems wrong to me that we're giving money to someone else. I get the whole "helping your fellow man" thing, but we should be helping ourselves first. The number is irrelevant, it's the principle.

Speaking of principles...

Interesting to note about what was offered to us for Katrina relief:
An article in the April 29, 2007 Washington Post claimed that of the $854 million offered by foreign countries, whom the article dubs "allies," to the US Government, only $40 million of the funds had been spent "for disaster victims or reconstruction" as of 2007 (less than 5%).[57]

Additionally, a large portion of the $854 million in aid offered went uncollected, including over $400 million in oil (almost 50%).[57]

Bah pledges.

And China offered us $5mil back then. This $100k probably has to do with relations with Philippines.

There was an innocent a couple of years ago where a bus full of Chinese tourists from Hong Kong was hijacked. The hotshot Filipino SWAT raided the bus and that led to many dead Chinese tourists. The Chinese (families) have been harassing the Filipinos for payment ever since, something the Filipino government has been either unable or unwilling to give. Also, the Chinese government is locked in a territorial dispute with the Philippines government...

And local Filipino people including policemen and nurses took photos in front of the deadly scene with big smiles on their faces.

yeah, that was the most f'ed up part of the whole ordeal.

every one already knew that their police force was a joke full of inept idiots, but those pictures painted the whole country as a bunch of callous assholes to the everyday chinese. great propaganda.

I remember hearing stories of hong kongers firing their maid staffs from that.

I feel less guilty now about all the times I had eggrolls, wonton soup, and kungpow chicken delivered and I only tipped 10%!

Whatever problems we have, I don't believe thousands of rotting corpses baking in the sun for a week and roving mobs of starving people are among them. A little perspective.

You know I speak the truth. The truth is that your politicians and plutocrats sold your civilization out for greater profits.

Yes, they have. They sold out the middle class just to enrich the business class. It will eventually bite them too.

Surely the Filipino government can print money to fund disaster relief, the way the US did for Katrina.

:hmm: Hmm, we're deficit-spending our annual budget with no money to spare for disaster relief ... oh well, fire up the printing presses! We'll quantitatively ease our way out of this.

Say's who? if you looks at history its leads to collapse of society and not the rich or politicians getting punished.

It also depends of your assets, based on which its determined how much debt you can accumulate before shit hits the fan. US has not reached that yet.

They need to spend at 100,000 on their own people. It would go a lot farther there too!

There are plenty of examples throughout history of societal collapse resulting in the rich/elite fleeing or worse, being executed.

But what I am referring to is in an economic sense. The US is the largest consumer market on the earth. The middle class drives the economy. If it vanishes, money stops flowing to the top.

http://world.time.com/2013/11/13/china-to-philippines-here-have-a-measly-100000-in-aid/?hpt=hp_c2

An excerpt:

"The U.S. has promised $20 million in aid for victims of Supertyphoon Haiyan in the Philippines and has mobilized an aircraft carrier for the relief effort. Britain is also sending a warship and has pledged $16 million. The Vatican is dispatching $4 million, Japan $10 million and New Zealand $1.7 million. And China, the world’s most populous nation and second largest economy?

It’s handing over $100,000."

Really sad ...

The $20m the U.S. is sending was paid for by China buying our debt, so when you really look at the numbers of where the money came from it's China: $20.1m, U.S. $0.
