China imposes online gaming curbs

The government in Beijing is reported to be introducing the controls to deter people from playing for longer than three consecutive hours.

The measures are designed to combat addiction to online role-playing games such as World of Warcraft and Lineage II.

....

The new system will impose penalties on players who spend more than three hours playing a game by reducing the abilities of their characters.

Gamers who spend more than five hours will have the abilities of their in-game character severely limited.

Internet users in China (courtesy New Synergy Consulting)
More than 20 million people play online games in China
Players will be forced to take a five-hour break before they can return to a game.

We need this in the US! Solve the obesity problem too while they're at it.

lol

i wonder how much they pay to be an undercover communist stooge to post in chat forums to help guide opinion.

i wonder if they monitor the chats in mprogs like world of warcraft...... they've already gotten msn and stuff to omit all references to democracy and such. we westerners are so compliant in the face of such oppressive regiems as long as theres cash to be made

Wasn't it in China that the couple left their infant unattended for hours while they played games at the local cafe for hours, returning to find their daughter dead in her crib?

From article: "In one extreme case, a player killed a fellow player who had stolen his virtual sword. The gamer received a suspended death sentence in June."

My bad, it was in Korea, not China.

yeah, it was about time something like that was put into place in China. Youths are just spending way, and I mean WAYYY too much time over there on MMORPGS and taking them WAYYY too seriously.

I also like the method of them actually diminishing char abilities. I just wonder if the played time is connected to the person's ID registration (cause i think you need to submit your national ID to pay for stuf) or if each game just tracks a person's account with the game.

Join a good guild, they'll help out. If you play on Shadowsong, I'll send you some gold if you need.

These Chinese farmers work 12 hours a day for $40 daily wage, farming virtual gold. Many of these gold farmers are children, which sucks. That aside. I think this is a good idea, and should enforce a tuned down version of it here in the US.

It should be noted, while the wages seem inconveivably low by US standards, they're fairly high by Chinese ones. Lower cost of living.
