China will set a deadline for automakers to end sales of fossil-fuel powered vehicles, a move aimed at pushing companies to speed efforts in developing electric vehicles for the world’s biggest auto market.

Xin Guobin, the vice minister of industry and information technology, said the government is working with other regulators on a timetable to end production and sales. The move will have a profound impact on the environment and growth of China’s auto industry, Xin said at an auto forum in Tianjin on Saturday.

A ban on combustion-engine vehicles will help push both local and global automakers to shift toward electric vehicles, a carrot-and-stick approach that could boost sales of energy-efficient cars and trucks and reduce air pollution while serving the strategic goal of cutting oil imports. The government offers generous subsidies to makers of new-energy vehicles. It also plans to require automakers to earn enough credits or buy them from competitors with a surplus under a new cap-and-trade program for fuel economy and emissions.

Well this could upend things just a tad. US automakers had been lobbying China to reduce their existing targets for electrified vehicles but it looks like instead they will implement a ban. Exactly when seems to be an open question but if they pick an aggressive target like 2030 shit's gonna get real.

I don't think 2030 is all that aggressive a target. It's not like they have to invent the tech from scratch, electric cars work and the infrastructure isn't tough.

Fucking communists. Trump might have to threaten them with sanctions over this. Ban all sales of the toyota prius into china. That will learn those pinkos good. In fact they should just stick to propping up the worlds latest nuclear armed country.

If only mainstream EV's were of a desirable design and affordable. There's no excuse not to return to rear wheel drive with them as they will not impact the floor pan.

I'll buy an electric vehicle when it can:
go 400 miles between charges
be the equivalent of a 1/2 ton pickup
tow 7500 pounds (boat)
refuel (recharge) in 5 minutes
cost the same as a Silverado 1500 LTZ/F150 Raptor without government tax credits

You will buy one long before that.

Your ilk talk big, but don't lay down the cash when it matters.

Look what happens when the virtue signal is missing.

The car doesn't sell?

Chevy Bolt EV outsells the Volt plug-in for two months straight

"The gap is likely to grow now that the Bolt EV is available nationwide.

2016 was the Chevrolet Volt's best year ever, thanks to a brand-new design and improved performance. It's on track for another good year, but a newcomer has quickly surpassed it.

For the last two months, the Chevrolet Bolt EV has outsold the Chevrolet Volt. Chevy sold 1,971 Bolts in July and 2,107 in August. By comparison, Chevy pushed just 1,518 and 1,445 Volts out the door in July and August, respectively.

As The Truth About Cars points out, the Bolt EV sold better in August than the Mercedes-Benz CLA-Class, Mazda CX-9, Jaguar F-Pace, Audi A3 and plenty more."

https://www.cnet.com/roadshow/news/chevy-bolt-ev-outsells-the-volt-plug-in-for-two-months-straight/

Chevy Bolt may outsell every other EV short of the Tesla Model S
And the car has only been available nationwide for a short time.

"The Chevy Bolt EV has only been on sale nationwide for a short while, but it's already on pace to outsell every other electric car on the market, save for the Tesla Model S."

https://www.autoblog.com/2017/09/08...ll-every-other-ev-short-of-the-tesla-model-s/

Chevrolet Bolt EV Leads All in August Plug-in Electrified Car Sales

"Just in time for Chevrolet’s announcement that it’s available nationwide, the Bolt EV has finished a sales month ahead of every other plug-in electrified vehicle sold in the U.S.

At least, it probably did assuming Tesla Model S sales estimated just 7 units less than the Bolt’s 2,107 August sales is accurate."

Obviously this car is a failure and it's all thanks to the bloody "ilk".

This is a bold move by China. Not just for Environmental issues, but for future business. If they succeed, don't be surprised if they become the major supplier of vehicles in the World.

Fix the cable? They'll probably just invest in the next thing. That's what oligarchs tend to do.
There is a lot of money competing to invest in the next thing. So oligarchs who dominate the last thing get only a fraction of the next thing.

I can't imagine that my beloved 'Vette that I've owned since 1978, my nice and nasty Z28 and my wife's custom turbo'd G35 will be perma banned from the streets any time in the future.

That's pretty much sacrilegious in our nation full of car enthusiasts, if not the free world.

Can't see that happening. Ever. (wishful thinking?)

iirc france and UK have the same plan but i think it's for 2040. frances peugeot is really pushing ahead. good thing IMO.

curious what the oil sellers in the middle east will do since they haven't really done much to diversify bar man made islands and the like in slave states like dubai to bring in tourism

i think you'll be able to drive a gas car if you want. just not anything new as they'll all be EVs. of course you'll have to pay the insane price for gasoline at that point too. if there's only a handful of fossil fuel cars on the road countrywide then how expensive will gasoline become to make it worth selling?

80% of China's electric production is generated from coal. They have gone from being a coal exporter to the world's largest importer of coal. Despite an overcapacity, they continue to start production (on average) of two coal fired power plants a week. Is an electric car powered by coal going to be less polluting than a modern gas powered one?

Interesting announcement but about as much BS as something uttered by Trump. Probably more related to China's stranglehold on world production of rare earth elements than any do-good spirit.

aren't they going solar like crazy too though? and along with india looking into thorium too i think.

i mean if this is meant for 2030 then it gives time to get that going. i mean it's not like the west where we drag our heels like crazy.

They are building all types of power generation at a breakneck pace.

Last I saw coal was in the mid 60% range for their most recent generation mix. They do still have issues with building it and overcapacity though even while they're making efforts to cut.

I'm more interested in the effects this move will have on the rest of the world if/when it causes battery prices to fall significantly faster over the next decade than expected, especially the US. State renewable targets could increase dramatically if more cost effective storage becomes commercially available.
