Hi all,

Finally I am taking a 10 days vacation to China next Wed. It's been over 3 years since I step out of U.S. soil. Since this is my first trip to China, I was hoping that some of you who had visited there can share your experience(s). Dos and Don'ts, what you like or don't like about your trip etc. What to avoid and what not to avoid. What to see and what not, etc.

I'll be visiting the following places: Beijing, shanghai, Guilin, and Xian.

I went to China last summer, almost a year from now. Wow, what a great experiance.

Pics: http://www.edhayes.us/Asia%20Pictures/?...sia%20Pictures&category=/China&page=0&

You can read my comments on those pics to see how i liked it (=

Advice: dont buy a post card, or a crappy tshirt. Visit silk ally in Beijing, cary lots of cash, youl spend it. Rather, dont cary cash- save it. Beijing is very dirty. many hotels give free internet in the room. Bring your laptop. I would rather visit Japan or Thailand. GO TO TIBET (=

GoatHerderEd,

Thanks for the headsup. Anything worth of buying there (watches, bags, etc)? Mainly named brands that are much cheaper there vs here in USA.

They're much cheaper 'cause they're not real silly. If you're in the market for music CDs and DVDs and don't mind pirated, you'll find hot deals. Make sure to ask to see the quality before buying.

If you see grass, walk on it immediately. Carry a small red book at all times and be ready to show it. Eat some noodles at a roadside stand.

They are ALL knockoffs. quality isnt the best, but you can get underwear cheaper than washing it if you negotiate well enough. Ties for $1 each. remember the 1/3 rule. They will usualy ask you to pay 3x the price they will actualy sell if for. Walk away, they WILL offer a better price. there is always more than one place to buy the same item. FULLY inspect EXACT item before you buy. Follow them if they go to get a "NEW" item. Give them money ONLY when you are satisfied. One you say a price, you MUST pay it. Water can also be negotiated.

I have heard stories that silk ally is going to be closed, i dont know if it is yet, but there will always be a market for knock offs in asia.

Oh, bring more than one ATM card. The ATMs like to eat cards. Although you do not get charged for using the ATM there (by the ATM's bank) you will get charged by your home bank most likely.

If you change your money keep the recipts they give you, you can only return the money if you have a change recipt.

Keep 90rmb with you to pay the airport tax to leave the country.

Sniff the fish before you eat it. (no pun intended), becareful about food poisoning (8 of my local Chinese co-workers got sick after eating at a HotPot)

Try NOT to take organized tours, they will drag you thru shops they get kickback from, and will not modify the agenga at all (even if you are the only one on the tour)

Don't buy tea at the official govements stores (they are 20x more expensive than local stores) same goes for silk.

If you are like me an over 6'3" and 240lbs then expect people to stop you and want to take pictures with you, but look out for pick-pockets.

The water over there is pretty dirty. Don't drink it unless you know for sure it's safe to drink. When I went to China, we always bought and drank bottled water. If you're going with a tourist group or something they probably already or are going to tell you. I think it's the raining season over there right now so bring or just buy an umbrella for $1 over there.

Edit: Oh yeah the last time I went with a tourist group, we visited all those places you are going to visit. Guilin is one of the most beautiful scenic areas ever. You'll probably take a cruise down the river. Even Bill Clinton liked it the most when he visited China. Xian is a pretty cool place, lots of historical background and 10's of thousands of hand-made statues.

BE VERY CAREFUL from who/where you buy bottle water from. Alot of immoral vendors in China will sell you faucet water as bottle water. They just collect empty bottles and fill them up with tap water and reseal the cap with glue/heat-gun. When you want to get bottle water, make sure you goto super-markets or some place reputable. DO NOT ever buy bottle waters from street vendor in china.

Don't eat food from street vendors unless you want to spend the vacation on a toilet.

Its not a good idea to use USD in china - the government doesn't like it, even if the people want your american dollars. Change them for Ren Min Bi first.

DON'T accept USD as change. its probably counterfeit.

if you buy something from a street salesmen, don't pay more than 1/10 of what he original asks you. Any clothing you buy from a street salesmen will be in shreds after the third time you wear it. I don't need to tell you that everything available on the street is a cheap knockoff of a cheap knockoff.

Movies: you can get them for about a dollar / DVD (5-10 RMB). Some of them work. Bring a laptop with a dvd drive to test them if you are serious about coming back with a suitcase full.

Massage parlors often double as brothels. So either avoid them or go running to them.

Taxis are very cheap. But its more fun to walk.

on any public transit, its a good idea to shell out for the equivalent of First class. Its ridiculous the conditions the chinese will endure in order to save money.

Practice pissing and crapping in a hole cut in the floor - thats how they do lots of their bathrooms.

Speaking of bathrooms . . . public restrooms DO NOT HAVE toiletpaper. So carry your own when you go out. I'm not kidding.

Be careful not to get pickpocketed. This is a real problem.

If someone comes up to you selling Rolexs or designer clothing, you already know that its not worth more than 5 dollars.

When haggling with folk about prices . . . aim for somewhere between 1/10 and 1/100 of what they originally ask. It may seem ridiculously low to you, especially at first, but it isn't worth a penny more than that. Also, when you give up and try to leave they'll leap over their counter and grab your legs . . as you try to walk away they shout lower and lower prices . . every foot you drag them takes a good percentage off the price.

Stay in relatively nice hotels (4 star or so). They are really cheap over there.

Bring a power converter.

Take pics.

In no particular order. I spent 3.5 weeks there last summer.

hehe, yeah, if you're 6'6" with long hair people literally point and stare.

Did you know that some buildings in china have 6'4" ish ceilings. Looks normal for the chinese but then there I am unable to stand up all the way.

Also, expect to be approached by people that want to practice english with you. It can be fun if you have time.

Beijing acrobats
Forbidden City
Temple of Heaven
Great Wall
Karaoke clubs may or may not be brothels
Bring your own toilet paper
Avoid the police/soldiers. Seriously.

Hangzhou (West Lake) and Suzhou are very beautiful. Both cities are near Shanghai.

Be VERY careful crossing streets. The drivers there are crazy. For comparison, I live in Chicago. We have bad traffic and rude drivers. My friend from Beijing thinks that Chicago drivers are very polite and nice. :Q
