I don't think it will be. It has enough land already, maybe not for the 1 billion it houses but it has enough. Expansionist china is a possibility but not in the near future.

I doubt they will offensively be expansionist, as that WILL get the rest of the world on their asses--not to mention, it would serve little purpose.
However, it would not suprise me if they continue to parade around issues like reuniting Taiwan, and creating a circumstance so that either other parties give in, or go to war over them.

Expand where? Only option is Taiwan and the Spratley islands. From what I see:

North
Mongolia is useless to them. Siberia will be too costly

East
Taiwan, it already has its eyes on it.

South
Vietnam they've tried that and got a bloody nose. Myammar is too poor for it to be useful. India would be too costly

West
Former Soviet nations that would infuriate and possibly start a war with Russia.

Anything farther would require a stronger Navy and Air Force to reinforce troops.

China knows that the only thing that differentiates it from the US is technology, education and economy.
It is doing everything in its power to build on these key conerstones of a superpower. Having 2-3 times the population of the US will benifit them in the long term as it approaches superpower status. Currently they are investing heavily in education, keeping their currency low to increase foreign investment , and energy infrastructure. This is what will allow China to become great. I'm interested to see how the communist system helps or limits their growth. Having a centralized system (socialist) allows resources to be invested directly into areas of interest and need. Whether it be nuke plants or other tech which normally wouldnt generate profits initially and wouldnt be created by industry. At the same time they are limited due to lack of a free market and freedoms where creativity is usually created.

Everyone knows that the future superpowers will be determined by resources available. Metals, energy, oil, water, etc. China is positioning itself well.
Read this article...i found it stimulating.
China...tomorrow's energy powerhouse
Not only that but China is smart...it realizes that oil is a scarce resource. They are currently mining vrey few of their own oil fields...they are buying the ME out of it first (see record breaking oil contracts with iran). Also, they are creating massive oil reserves: we are talking reserves that can fuel all of china oil for 2 months with no imports. Not only that but they have international companies owned by the state buying up portions of such companies here in canada to develop tar sands techonology which could effectively give canada 1 trillion barrels or oil and china considerable amounts as well.
If china is able to become a superpower, yes they will be expansionary as they will have tons of control economically and will by that time have multinational corperations (already happening). I can see them being similar to the current US except not having to be critiqued by the electorate. They still need to make huge leaps in technology and education though

I would say that China is not an expansionist power, yet. I think that the US is too dependent on them for low-cost goods and services, which they do have a hold on. Currently, they are buying every peice of US steel and industrial equipment that they can get their hands on. A nieghbor of mine, Andrew W. Boswell (a Korean War Veteran), once theorized that China and the US would go to war within 20 years. That was in 2000 I believe. I am also of that same opinion. I think the US should stop trading with them completely personally, although, that would take Wal-Mart down with it.

Has been for 5000 years or something like that. Will they resume where they left off a couple hundred years ago? Hopefully not.

An expansionist power? Not likely, in the next couple decades while the chinese economy continues to grow. War scares away potential investors in sectors other than military production.

How many country did China invaded in the last 25 years? And how many for the US? Now, tell me who's the expansionist power? When we need resources, we don't invade.......we liberate!

in about 30-40 years after china's economy finally surpasses US, the communists will begin to expand.

taiwan however, is a matter of when. Those communists don't need taiwan, but they want it. To me, taiwan is more of a strategic thing more than anything else - they can get some sort of a "buffer province" as of any kind of invasion coming from the east.

looks like we gotta give it to the coummunists on this one.....and the president that has added more hatred towards US in the middle east more than any other president in history is: George W. Bush.

Communist only in name. They're as ruthless as a capitalist can possibly be.

Hmm, please read up on the Sino-Soviet split. The Chinese were never chummy with Russia.

Uhh your making it seem like its all clear sailing from here on, that certainly isn't the case.

China will, in a few short years, have a huge problem with the disparity between the number of males and females. Males in a few short years will have a huge problem finding mates. Its growth rate, population-wise, has declined sharply. And we all know, that in a few decades China will face the problem of aging workers, the same problem Japan is facing.

Another dark side is China's hidden AIDS epidemic "hidden disaster". This huge story is hidden from the rest of the world to present China is a rosey kind of way. Also, corruption remains a big issue.

So while China can become a huge force one day, its not clear sailing like some make it believe to be.

china has many corruptions that the world has never heard about (terriost acitivities in xin jiang, increasing male population, AIDS and flu viruses, government corruptions, poverty.....)

aging working will be replaced, don't worry about it, they've got 1.3 billion people to spare.

as long as the communists hav the people under controlled, they will succeed if us does nothing about their situation right now. like i said it's just a matter of when.

as of the last 25 years, my mistake on the russians, but they were mostly rebuilding, and focusing on taiwan. the communists are.....i say obessed on reclaiming taiwan as a part of china and destroy the nationalists that fought them more than half a century ago.

if all else fails and things turn ugly, china do have a last resort weapon against us - those hardcore suicidal north koreans that will f*ck with us. I seriously doubt this will happen.

and do you wanna know where osama is right now? he is very likely to be in china rite now.

Actually, China is currently in the process of trying to fix a labor crisis. 1.3 billion people does seem like a huge working pool, but unfortunately (or fortunately, depending on your world view) the resources they need to achieve an ever-expanding economic boom is going to be pretty damn huge.

As far as Osama, he just doesn't matter anymore.

the labor crisis...i kno wut ur talking about now

the older generations whom were farmers, don't really get paid much

their sons and daughters want to go into the cities and seek for oppertunity - almost all of them went into the cities, and have no success. In extreme (and some) cases, they became either gang members, prostitutes. Now you have an excess amount of people who are trash and not enough farmers

They certainly have the balls to apply economic pressure. And I wouldn't go so far as to say that we won't ever have to fight them. I'd say by 2100 we will have at least one major conflict with them.

shanghai is pretty international too, more like beijin or the 3 gorge dam in china. I'd really hate to see any country to attack the 3 gorge dam in china because what you kill is millions of innocent civillians....that's pretty damn low and dirty to use such tactic.

i don't think anyone's gonna be stupid enough to start a major conflict at this age - it'll just be devastating or maybe total destruction.
