Holy cow. I was getting nauseas just watching that. :Q

Think about that guy walking back to his seat. His body is traveling 265 mph backwards relative to the ground, but it's as if he's just walking normally.

China is very bullish, I would assume one of their companies performed the construction.

However, China does lack a lot of engineering talent, so it is possible they contracted with a western nation to do that part of the work. An alternative thought is it may be reverse engineered just like the Boeing derived jumbo jet they riped off and deny it's 99.5% resemblance to the Real McCoy..

Once they got moving above 124MPH, highway traffic appeared to be standing still.

How fast do normal trains go, about 90Mph?

Does that train use a diesel engine? I'm guessing it does.

It doesn't have an engine. Both the train and track have powerful electromagnets, which push against each other. They levitate the train above the track and propel it forward.

Ahh right. I have actually read about this technology before.

Of course, the distance between the rail and train must be constantly monitored by computer. If there's a power failure, or computer glitch I think the results could be disastrous.

No engines at all. Magnets are embedded in to the trains lower part near the track. Along the track there are precisely spaced electromagnetic coils. Each of those coils will produce a precisely timed magnetic charge that will repel the magnets in the train it's self. If the timing of those electomagnetic coils goes off too soon it will stop or slow the train and too late and it won't propel it. Those same magnets are often used to suspend the train above the tracks as well.

Actually, Transrapid is a product of Germany, from Deutsche Bahn, ThyssenKrupp, and SIEMENS:

The trains in France go from 186-200 mph. They tested one of theirs a little while back and brought it to 357 mph. It was a conventional electric train.

I just can't wait till they make the Amtrak trains move a bit faster on the East Coast. The acela express goes about 90mhp.

I feel like we're living in the stone age here.

Have there been any major maglev crashes? What safety precautions are in place in case of "magnet failure" for the lack of a better term?

The continuing problem is that we are using legacy right of ways/power systems and don't have enough grade separation. The Acela could go a lot faster if the route conditions were improved.

what was that squiggly line that showed up on the video when the other train passed.

270mph. must be one hell of an experience.
