wow.. why cant they do this in the US?

ie:
prefab buildings

new 5story office building is being built near where i live. it's taking them months so far. the concrete for the final floor has been poured.

the noise, traffic, and parking spaces taken up by the construction workers. finishing the building in 6 days would have been GREAT!

Union labor.

since it's all prefab everything's planned right?

Looks like it. I could beat their record. I will jsut completely construct two halves of a building and move them into place and connect them. Give me 2 days for actual construction

In all seriousness though - how much time was invested to create the modular design?

The construction rate is impressive for assembly but it would help to know how long it took to design and make all the prefab components

Union labor.

I dislike unions for the most part but for the life of me, I don't understand why a kid that lives in his parents basement posts about 50% of his AT posts harping on unions, lol.

Chinese can't make a decent axe, which is just a chunk of metal on a stick. I certainly wouldn't trust their prefab engineering.

I am sure the quality isn't going to be up to U.S. standards.

But labor sure is hell cheap in China, they will work in the heat, cold, rain for $.75/hr and not bitch about it.

What is a "storey"?

World English Dictionary
storey or ( US ) story (ˈstɔːr&#618 [Click for IPA pronunciation guide]

— n , pl -reys , -ries
1. a floor or level of a building
2. a set of rooms on one level

I took the word straight from the story (article).

Safety is the biggest factor as to why we cannot do this in the US. The story stated they were lucky no one was injured **no injuries were reported**.

Well, that and it would take 6 days to have some one fill out the paperwork required to get the thing approved. Followed by 6 years of lawsuits and appeals by anyone that didn't want to compete with the new hotel or didn't want their view blocked. But that's capitalism for you?

that's 10 years here in Berkzerkely--after the 3 open community meetings to discuss all of the reasons why anyone and everyone would be opposed to the project.

I don't like unions and I was part of a rather powerful one for a couple years. I would love to get on a job building these kinds of buildings. Would never happen in the USA though. To many safety restrictions, environmental restrictions, employment restrictions, building codes, etc etc etc.

I would be very surprised if the 6-day construction includes:
Site setup
Site clearance
Piling or excavation and casting the in situ concrete foundations
Off site fabrication of the modules (which it obviously doesn't)
Installation of the mechanical and electrical services; they must have done first fix, but not sure if they did second fix. Presumably the major items of plant have been installed
Finishes / installation of fixtures, sanitary ware (maybe they are using pods?), etc. internally
Soft and hard landscaping, car parking, roads, pavement, etc. externally

From the video it seems that they constructed the super-structure or 'shell' in 6 days (and they also had the internal partitions installed).

Constructing the super-structure is the most visually productive time of the build because it seems that you have done an awful lot in a short period of time.

My point is that the hotel is far from practically complete.

daw123, obviously the entire thing wasn't constructed in 6 days. still impressive.

The same amount of work could be undertaken in the States or UK within the same time period, if we did't have to comply with health and safety regulation (and the construction costs would be much higher).

Plus the article claims the hotel was built in 6-days, which is as you say, complete BS. It is not physically possible to have a construction period of 6 days for a new 15-storey hotel, no matter what country it is in.

There are a large number of factors that restrict this kind of project from happening in the States:

1. OSHA. Safety rules in itself makes this impossible.

2. Labor rates. The amount of people they had working on this is probably astronomical. The costs in labor alone would be insane in the states. In china, it probably cost them as much as the materials did.

3. Material cost...everything's made there.

I agree that the 6 days probably didn't include:

Design
Site Clearing
Site Prep
Foundation
MEP Finishing
Interior Finishes
HVAC Equipment installation
Testing & Balancing
Commissioning

Yea, the structure went up in 6 days but what about everything else?

daw123, like I said true true, but it's quite impressive they were able to throw this up in 6 days. No way they would allow that here in the States, at least not in California. Personal experience tells me so.
