It's not weird. This was also a claim made by the moon landing hoax believers, as no stars were visible there either.

But it has been easily and thoroughly debunked. Basically, the shutter speed settings on photographing brightly lit objects like the moon are simply far too fast to pick up faint points of light like individual stars.

The lander is in direct sunlight, the brightness of the terrain is overpowering the starlight. Stated otherwise, if the camera's exposure were set to something that could pick up starlight, the landscape would be one very bright blur.

Makes perfect sense. I should have known that from my photography days. And here I was thinking my eyes were continuing to crap out.

I think the whole thing is made up. I think they made up a fake rover, created a fake relationship with it, then killed it off to prevent getting found out.
