The behaviour of a group of Chinese tourists has been criticised after a video showed a group frenziedly using plates as shovels to gather up shrimp at a hotel buffet in Chiang Mai, with subsequent photos revealing that a large amount of food went wasted.

In the video, which has been widely shared on Chinese social media since it came to the attention of state media, the hungry tourists are seen jostling each other to get at the food and walking away with several plates overflowing with shrimp.

Much to the dismay of the hotel staff, much of the food which was carried away was left uneaten, prompting netizens to deride the behaviour of the greedy tourists.

I wouldn't mind the hoarding so much if they didn't just waste the food.

i'm sure others have done the same or worse, but china seems to have a real culture of shaming their own tourists, probably with state encouragement (revoking of visas), to help 'encourage' proper behavior by others

The Chinese are horribly selfish. I'm not saying others are not; I'm just saying that the Chinese are.

When a Chinese grad student first showed up in the States for grad school, I took her out shopping and junk. We went to a fast food place, and the concept of refilling your drink on your own was completely foreign to her. She was unsure whether it was stealing, and it took a bit to convince her that it's okay.

I get it, though. In Taiwan, a place like McDOnald's will give you one napkin and one packet of ketchup with your meal. You're welcome to ask for more... and they will give you exactly one more. If they set them out for people to take, then people would grab handfuls and stuff them into their pockets and purses and whatnot.

In fact, anyone living in the States with a Chinese mother can probably relate to what I wrote above.

I would actually love that. They usually give me way too many ketchup and sauce packets in America's hat. Can't throw them out cause it's wasteful. In high school, I saved a ton of ketchup packets in my locker. Think we used them for sauce when I brought them home at the end of the year.

I once watched a woman (American) build a log cabin out of an entire chafing dish of crab legs on her plate. I told the F & B manager I was leaving because if I stayed, I was going to slap her. I walked past her on the way out and childishly made piggy noises.

I'm from Taiwan and even I really hate my own people sometimes (Both Taiwanese and Chinese), they can be incredibly selfish, cheap, and rude/obnoxious in public. Really feel ashamed when I see those who have not adapted to American culture.
