Chipset cooling

I have an Asus A7V266E and their's small fan on the front side bus. It's been doing quite some nose these past week and i was thinking about this: take and old CPU HS, drill small holes for clips and put it on the chipset! Anyone ever did that? I don't wanna buy a HS made for that since i have 3 old cpu HS waiting around.

Plenty of people replace the heatsink. You don't really need one with a fan on it, that's mainly a gimmick, unless you're overclocking.

I can't tell from the pictures how the heatsink is designed on that. If the heatsink is completely covered with small fins and the fan is mounted on top, then you can just remove the fan and it'll work fine most likely. If the heatsink is integrated with the fan (just fins surrounding the blades of the fan) then you'd have to replace it.

You can purchase thermal tape to attach a heatsink as well. It's basically double-sided tape with some heat transfer ability. No need to drill holes that way.

their's no fin on the HS.... it'S just a little plate and a fan on it (can't take the fan off)...so i need a new HS if i take this one out. But if i put tape, how much weight will it take, cause i have retail AMD HS to put on the chipset :Q

I doubt tape will take that much weight reliably. Something perhaps the size of older SuperSocket7 heatsinks would be probably fine.

Try one of these. I hear they are supposed to be pretty solid.

Try ones of those Zalman Northbridge coolers, i have one on my KT7A-RAID, and i can OC further than the old stock HSF combo.

Do you have an Asus A7V with that stupid little ARX fan on it? Those things make me wonder if they think anyone's at home in the consumer's head. I actually have two machines that are running A7V266 boards, and on one that's in a dusty environment, the fan has already gummed up and quit. Never noticed any performance anomalies, but it just eats away at you to know something's hosed inside your computer that you're not fixing.

I'll probably get a Zalman.
