chipset fan necessary?

Hello,

I have a Shuttle AK31 ver. 3.1A and have been happy with the board. However, the chipset fan makes all kinds of crazy sounds. If I'm not going to be overclocking at all, do I even need to use a fan or heatsink on the chipset? I have two fans blowing air into the case, and two blowing air out.

Thanks for the help.

You could avoid having a noisy fan by putting a heavy duty heatsink. Chaintech has a KT266A board (7VDJA) with a big chipset heatsink that doesn't need a fan.

I had the same proplem as with your chipset fan , it was driving me crazy, crazy, crazy so all i did was put a thermaltake blue orb on it works great no more noise now, the only prob is taking the mobo out to put it in you can pick'em up at www.big008.com if your interested

AFAIK you don't need a chipset fan for Via KT266 motherboards. (my K7T 266 runs just fine without one)

My shuttle's fan doesn't make any noise, and the geek effect is cool. Have you contacted spacewalker, to see if you can get a replacement fan?

Actually, I sent them an email a couple of weeks ago and I didn't hear anything. Is there a phone number for them?

Thanks again.

Just disconnect the fan, or remove it entirely. Many kt266 and kt266a boards have no chipset fan, some don't even have a heatsink. It's a marketing gimmick, techno-flash trash. With a fake French accent, call it Junque. Actual price to the board manufacturer less than $.01.

If you're terribly concerned, get an aftermarket passive heatsink from 2cooltek, plycon, millisec or a variety of others. Never mess with it again.

If you don't overclock, you can just get away with a Heat Sink. But if you plan to Overclock, the cooler the better.

<<My board is running for 2 weeks and the fan is still working fine.>>

Wait a month, and you'll be singing a different tune.

Brandon,

I've had the same board for 1 month and had the same problem. Took me a while before I was able to diagnose it since it would only make noise every now and then....then it got REAL bad! I took the thing off and set my processor back to it's rated speed (I had it overclocked 50 mhz). I then ordered the Vantec chipset cooler bundle b/c I'm going to overclock (CPU) back to a gig as soon as I get a new fan for the north bridge working. I tore the blade off of that fan to see if it was ball bearing or what and it's just a cheapy electro magnet fan--so the polarity is probably screwed up on all of them. If you want... you can e-mail me at the link in my sig and I'll let you know how it goes when I get a new fan on there. Hopefully the Vantec fan will just screw right down to the existing heat sink b/c it's a ball bearing fan and it should have a long life. If it doesn't bolt right to the heat sink I guess I'll use one of theirs but I really don't feel like dealing w/ all that b/c I read an article on a guy who put a Titan on the same board and he said they slapped some nasty thermal tape on those stock heat sinks.
