Chipset fan went bye bye

UPDATE: Gigabute USA will sell me the fans for $4.00 each + shipping
I am placing an order for 6 of them.
So now ... I am down to advice how to swap the fans.
Somebody has to have done that before.

One of my Intel 845PE chipset fans was caught stopping and starting during a spot-check of the innards of my case. I suspect one or two more are making occasional noises.

I fear to run it much as I do not want to loose the whole MB for a fried chipset.

Where can I buy a fan for the chipset? They all look like the same item in all my PCs. It would appear to be a simple fan swap.


If you have made such repairs:

Where can the fan be bought?
Is there more to the swap than 4 screws?
Will I need some AS5?

I'm assuming the fan is screwed to the chipset heatsink, but I would appreciate any insight.

Most chipset fans are mounted to the heatsink with screws. Shouldn't need new TIM unless you pull the heatsink off the chip, but I'd probably do it anyway as long as I was in there. If the heatsink is glued on, I'd probably leave it alone. Several places carry the small and/or specialty fans: buyextras.com, jab-tech.com, sidewindercomputers.com ...

My MSI K8N Neo4 developed a voltage problem that affected the fan on the southbridge. I found the problem too late and had to RMA. I would just RMA the whole board. It may not be just the fan. My fan was fine after i tested when i yanked the board. This is why i will never buy another MSI mobo--4 RMAs in 3 years. Im at 3.5 years now and building a new machine. Fingers crossed that nothing happens in the next week...

Sorry Homer,

That does not fit my situation. These boards were purchased and built ca 2003-2005. They were in storage for a while, but that does not extend the warranty. Besides for $5.00 each, I can afford a fan.

After my second fan went, I just pointed a 80 mm case fan at the chipset and so far has lasted longer than the two OEM fans combined

Thanks for that note. I have a 120 pointed at it from the case wall now. If I give it a nudge, it works for now.

AFAIK, I have been blessed the originals have lasted a good while and are still available. I am stocking up on them given their cheap price and shipping. Getting them while I can.
