well, if #1 has the gma950, then i would just skip it outright. the x3100 vs the x1200 is a close comparison but i would say the x1200 is slightly faster. the x1200 has more texture fill rate than the x3100, but the x3100 has more shader units, and supports pixel shader model 4, where the ati is only up to shader model 2.0b. i would go for either number 2 or 3 depending on which one is cheaper, with #3 the higher choice for me as the 14.1" is smaller and a little lighter, and i like hp's design better than the toshiba's. i personally have an acer 5920 with the gma x3100, and the same t5250, but with 2gb of ram and 250gb hdd instead. i got it because i liked its design, and it has great battery life too, i get up to 6.5hrs on the 8cell, but i didnt really want to play too many games on it, but so far the x3100 has been pretty good, runs aoe3 really well @ medium settings @ 1280x800.

I would get the HP due to the superior build quality compared to toshiba (from all that I have read, i believe this to be true)

Disagree! If given a choice, in laptops go with the Intel Core2Duo over the AMD Turion. You will get better reliability, battery life, and overall performance.

Having said that, I would say go with the second listed AMD unit mainly because it has a ATI GPU and a larger screen, which would be better for your gaming penchant.

I just bought a Dell Vostro 1500 Notebook with a $384 Instant savings.
Link
It seems to still be available so check it out. I don't think you'll be disappointed.
AFAICT, it was one of the best offers, perhaps overshadowing the deals of Black Friday.
Available with Windows XP Home.
Good luck.

best buy has laptop memory for like 30-35 bucks a gig

get whatever laptop you want, pull out the RAM and upgrade it

'cuz 1 gig sucks on laptops especially with Vista... omg

How much are those? I think the HP laptops are built pretty nice...knew someone with a Toshiba and he wasn't a happy camper.

#3. I've heard a lot of bad things about Toshiba's build quality. HP, on the other hand, seems to be making respectable machines.

^ What he said -=- #2!

Secondly, I have a Toshiba A215-4807... and I'm perfectly happy with it, after a few modifications -- having nothing to do with the "build quality", but rather the configuration (memory, drivers, and so forth)...

My Toshiba A215 is a gorgeous machine - visually impressive (although somewhat big - having a 15.4" screen) and has prodded MANY of my friends into buying laptops for themselves and their families (no Toshibas that I know of however - one person said they didn't want to copy me - whatever!).

Somebody commented on it today -- how I had cost him $3000 dollars. He bought a lappy for himself, then his daughters wanted one too, blah, blah, blah.

Truthfully, I've seen some Toshibas I wouldn't buy, even other versions of the A215!

Nobody maintains 100% consistency across their entire product line, so caveat emptor!

That would be like saying ALL Chevys are great, based on the Corvette...

Running around in airports, and so forth, I haven't seen anything that's turned me green with envy, soooo... I guess it was a good choice!

2 people so far have said that Toshiba builds suck. I certainly agree, make it three.

Toshiba has had a serious history, I'm convinced.

A core2 system will totally own any AMD comp. Plus the Accelerator X3K video card will generally pretty much overlap the ATI graphics, not to mention better battery life.

Larger screen means a bigger lapto to carry around. Unless you really want something heavier, I'd say most 14.1" laptop owners have not complained about screen size as the notebook they have is considerably thinner and will not notice the difference between 15.4" over time because it's a laptop to begin with.

larger screen means less battery life.

AMD blows compared to the 2 C2D T5XXX proessors you listed. Its not even a competition.

If the first one has integrated GFX, go with the AMD if gaming is what you want. If the first one has dedicated GFX, you shouldnt be looking at anything else.

Another laptop has been found with a Core 2 Duo T5270 @ 1.4Ghz with a 8400M GS Video card. Upgrade options available include Core 2 Duo T5470 or an 8600M GT...which of these would be the biggest gaming boost?

Edit: It also has 3gb of memory, will Windows XP support this?

Yes - see my sig.
