If you could have your choice between a Ford Edge or a Ford Fusion (both the base models), which would you choose? Or would you want a third option?

the [newly designed] Escape looks the best out of all of them since it's a base model anyway. Out of those 2, Fusion.

Third option. Honda Accord, 4 banger, stick. Better car, better resale, better mileage, better handling, less potential headaches.

I just bought a ford fusion se. The base model is somewhat lacking, but the se with ford touch is pretty nice. I was 26k out the door for my model. Primarily highway driving with some city is 29 mpg. Most importantly its actually a 4 door sedan with some style that is bearable to be seen in.

I am moving from a Jeep Cherokee to something which does not use as much gas (I am going from driving 25-50 miles a week to 500-750). I have looked at the Escape; should I look more?

30,000 miles a year?

Damn man, get the one with the most comfortable driving position - cheap maintenance - and best mileage.

Fusion uses a 4cyl, Edge uses a V6 - 4cyl wins. I'd look the new Altima as well.

How about a Cruze or Focus with their SFE package?

In that case, go with the Fusion or any other sedan. I think it's harder to achieve the claimed fuel mileage on SUVs--You will have to drive very gently.

Are you looking at brand new vehicles, or "new to you?"

Brand new. My Jeep is over 12 years old.

Given a third option, I'd go for a V6 Mustang again. I'm happy with the 30-32 MPG I average on the highway; surprisingly a good commuter car with a bit of power (305 hp). Or actually I would love to have a Subaru BRZ. But between the 2 Ford options, I'd go Fusion if you need 4 doors.

Fusion easily, especially with the need to drive that many miles and mpgs will be important. Try to get the 1.6 engine though.

Fusion for MPG's.
I would truthfully get an even smaller car.
I drive around 30K miles per year and I got a Civic sedan.

Why only those two vehicles?

Yes. The choice is dictated by circumstance: I live in a rural area, and any Subaru or VW dealers are over 100 miles away. The window of opportunity to change vehicles went from around this summer to this weekend rather abruptly, so the time to shop for a car at a distant dealer was not available. The Honda Accord was also considered.
