Would you rather play games at 3.825Ghz or play games at 4.050Ghz for the cost of 190$ more?

I'm currently limited to my memory speed on my DDR3 platform. I've been able to overclock my FSB to 425 with my DDR3 1600 to 1700mhz giving me 3.825 I've thought about picking up some 1800 speed for 179$ but it tears into some of my budget for my i7 build. The other option is I can try and sell this DDR3 board and RAM, which is hard to do due to i7 and play on my DDR2 8Gb 900Mhz platform. I can't use the current RAM on the i7 build because of the voltage on the DDR3 I have now is 1.8-1.9v where i7 requires 1.65v at the most...

I've heard I can use my memory but I don't want to take any chances and deteriorate the life of my i7 build. I've already seen it on my old FX60 system. 600$ chip losses overclocking capability in span of a year... never again...

I'm getting a new P5Q Premium replacement board in the next few weeks from egg. I could also sell that to pay off the price of some DDR3 1800 but that would only get me 4gb where i'm losing 4 from the 8Gg of DDR2 900 I already have...

this is racking my brain!

What would you do?

For $190 I'd stick with 3.825 ghz.....in my opinion the difference would be so small you could barely notice it, if at all.

Are you serious? Do you really expect there to be ANY noticeable difference at all? Heck, you aren't going to see a difference even between 3.0 and 4.0. Upgrade bug really seems to melt the brains of some people on these forums...

melt my brain? check your sig smart alec

when you get your 8400 to 4ghz then you will understand

EDIT: as a matter of fact, i've had this at 4Ghz on my DDR2 platform and its a difference for me

good luck at 4Ghz

well, you could just be satisfied with your measly 3.8ghz and donate the money to a worthy charity....i know, i know, it's hard to make sacrifices.

honestly, i really don't see how you would notice a difference. besides there must be a better way for you to spend that money, even if you must spend it on your computer. video card upgrade, maybe?

Um, there would definitely be a noticeable difference. Especially if you're running vista.

I am almost about to do that, it is fast... giving it some thought. maybe i'll just think about it till i get the money together some day down the road when a 2x2gb 1800 or more gets a little cheaper

~5.8% increase in clockspeed. So, assuming game performance scales linearly with CPU speed (unlikely), his current games running at 30FPS will now run at 31.76FPS. And those running at 90FPS will run at 95FPS.

Noticeable difference not found - certainly not $190 worth.

I think I'm going to save it for later on down the road. 3.825 is nice. I just feel I'm sorta wasting the potential of this thing under H20 cooling and I sorta am curious about my recent fluctuations from my old mobo if it weakened the overclockability of this chip. Ran 4.050Ghz @ 1.320v on my Asus P5Q Premium board with DDR2-900...

thanks all for your input, you've helped me out

the better question is... how much "spare money" do you have lying around itching to be spent

HAH, i know  I think if I do and when I do, I'll go for some DDR3 2000 and see what this thing is made of : woot!

but that won't be for a looong time

Spend that money on a better graphic card or a solid state drive. It isn't worth the 6% difference in clock speed.

It is noticeable in UT3, trust me but I will make a switch if I can do an even wash for some parts I'm trying to sell

Cheers
