I'm not convinced that high cholesterol CAUSES heart disease. AFAIK, there is only a correlation, and the mechanism behind heart disease is poorly understood by mainstream medicine.

You definitely should NOT (previously had a typo) be convinced that it causes heart disease because it doesn't. However, just because it's poorly understood doesn't mean that it's negligible. A correlation is still a correlation and is considered important if it is significant. An appropriate analogy would be that many drugs are not understood and the mechanism is relatively unknown. However, that doesn't mean they cannot be used if their safety has been assessed and the benefits outweigh the detriments.

Granted, I would like further research to be done, but there is sensible physiology behind it, especially if you get everything literally measured, as opposed to getting things like "calculated LDL."

Do not do a Paleo-like diet for cholesterol. Paleo diets tends to have a lot of animal/saturated fats, which are the main predictor of blood cholesterol levels. .

Saturated fat dogma, saturated fat does not adversely affect cholesterol levels.

Also, something to consider is activity level. Nearly all studies consider sedentary as the normal individual. Higher cholesterol levels are much more forgivable in those who exercise regularly. I still don't think eating copious amounts of fatty meat is healthy though. I eat a fair amount and am very healthy, but would be most concerned - not if I just had high cholesterol, but if I also had something like hypertension in conjunction with it.
