I bought a new computer recently and I want to make sure I get the right operating system for it, right now I have windows xp home, but I dont know if thats taking full advantage of my hardware. Specs are as follows:

Motherboard: A8N32-SLI Deluxe
CPU: AMD Athlon 64 X2 3800+ Manchester 2.0GHz
RAM: OCZ 2GB (2 x 1GB) 184-Pin DDR SDRAM DDR 400
GPU: Geforce 7900GT x2

Aaaand other crap I dont think is too relevant. So Yea, any input would be great. Thanks

XP Home is fine. You could get Vista if you're so inclined, but I'd stick with Home for the time being.

go with XP PRO wih the free upgrade coupon. for 1 thing PRO is gonna have at least 5 years support ,while Home is only 2 yr after Vista launch. Besides, the upgrade is amlost free wih PRO, and costs at least $49 with Home. buying PRO or MCE2005, is the best wayto go. MCE005 gets you a free upgrade ($(20) shipping and handling) to VISTA HOME PREMIUM media rich, and PRO gets you Vista Bus.

Doesn't that just give you an oem upgrade though? If you buy into Vista early I think it would be better to get retail. That way you can move it to a new machine when it's time to upgrade. I have the feeling MS won't be as accommodating moving around oem licenses with Vista as they were with XP.

(K)Ubuntu is great but I suspect his rig was built with gaming in mind and as such, he'd better keep a version of Windows installed, even if he also is to use Linux.
