Say what? 10 yr old kid is ~5th grader. Even most 1st graders know what an iPad is. My 9 yr old daughter knows how to use her iPad better than me. My 4yr old nephew who's in preschool know what an iPad is and has his own. My 2yr old cousin has his own iPad and know how to play Wizard of Oz and Barnie using Air Video. That is the beauty of the iPad. Children and grandparents can figure it out and use it.

The way I look at it is you either buy them what they want or not buy them at all. Fire is not iPad substitute.

I stand corrected

iPad mini. The kids games/apps/education is much better on iOS. Android tablets have smartphone blown up apps. Plus, iOS is easier to use.

When was the last time you used an Android device for any length of time? IIRC it was an original Evo back before Gingerbread wasn't it?

If she asked for an iPad and you are willing and able to get one then that's what you should get her.

You don't want to be "that" Dad.

BTW I have 2 girls. One 11 the other 7. The older one wants an iPad and of course the younger one wants what the older one does. :-(

could you use that for a case of "here's one, learn to share"?

The Nexus 7 is better than the iPad Mini and significantly cheaper so I would give it a serious look.

Despite what the iFanboys claim Android has plenty of apps with tablet support.

Yeah, like:
facebook
pandora
flipboard
twitter

uhhhhhh ohh wait none of these have a tablet specific app for android. App support for android tablets just is not there. Fact.

Honestly, android doesn't compete in tablets. iPad wins hands down.

I can't believe how many people are willing to just drop $500 for a Christmas present for a child.... crazy. No wonder kids today are so damn spoiled. It's rare when I spend $500 on myself let alone my kid.

If they want something that expensive that's when they save up their allowance IMO.

Get her the iPad Mini:
Here is why - younger cellphoneless kids use iMessage/Facetime a lot as it allows them to talk and communicate with their friends who have iPods and iPads. If you get them a Kindle Fire they will know the difference as the tablet won't let her talk to her friends seamlessly. iDevices are very popular with kids and she probably doesn't want "different" - she wants what her friends have so she can chat and play games with them.

I wouldn't even consider the Fire an acceptable substitute. iPad mini really a great device for kids.

I don't understand why people keep saying this about Apps on Apple.

How are Apple store apps better?

I found it to be quite the opposite. Apple not only charges you for apps that are completely free on Android. They also prevent your device from playing some apps to get you to buy their new product.

It's been 3 years and I still have never purchase 1 app on Android (simply never had a need to).

Interpret this how you will, but there's a good reason Android has more free apps.

This is completely false. My wife has an Acer Iconia A200, and my six year old plays the hell out of games on that thing and watches lots of movies on it. She loves it. And I paid $300. There's no way you're going to convince me that she would get more enjoyment from an ipad. Certainly not $200 worth.

My 9 year old daughter wanted an iPod touch for her birthday in August. Her younger sister has one. I know she'll mainly play games and watch movies, so I told her about the iPad Mini to be released in the fall, and recommended we wait. She agreed and wanted that. Then the price came out. And then I convinced her that a 7" android tablet was basically the same thing and a lot cheaper. We went to the store and looked at them, and she chose the Samsung Galaxy 2 7.0. She was beaming a smile and is very happy with it. It was a lesson taught and learned, and she was mature and patient every step of the way. I got it from Best Buy with the 2 year accident warranty, and got a 32 gig memory card from Newegg.

The difference is you let her choose not chose for her. The OP is in a different situation as it's a Christmas present and it's what she asked for. She asked for X you give Y and try to explain it's close enough to what they asked for. What's the point in asking what they want if you just ignore them when they tell you and get them what you think will be good enough.

Yes, what you did is better as it teaches your kid to make more informed decisions, Christmas is a bit of a messed up consumerism spoiling holiday and I don't really like the entire gift giving thing that much anyway.

I'm thinking of an iPad mini for my 8 year old nephew. I haven't seen one in person yet, so I will have to take a visit to local Bestbuy. Not sure how small things will look compared to regular iPad. I thought about Nexus 7 but the screen feels too small for a kid, and iTunes still has a lot more educational stuff than Google Play.

Disclaimer: I own an iPad (1st gen) and a Nexus 7, and for myself I am moving onto Android. There is no bias here.

I'd have to agree. Heck, I was really happy when I got my Jak 2 game back in 2003. Thanked my grandma for it, and played it for many a year. Heck, I still sometimes pop it in today.

My vote is for the nexus 7. Use the extra coin to buy a nice case because well, they will probably end up dropping it.

Reasons why Nexus 7 is the best choice.

1) Cheaper...
2) Free apps and games (tons of them)
3) Screen is better
4) built in GPS, you can always find where you kid is...
5) Games look better and run super smooth an the quad cpu
6) Google OS is more open and kids will pick it up fast and do more with it since it's not locked down like apple.
7) JellyBean is the future OS and soon take over the world...

5) GOOGLE ROCKS!

Done deal...

While the nexus 7 does come with a front facing camera there is no rear cam on back the ipad mini ... it's about it's only fault I can think of as to why to get it over a nexus 7 but if it had a rear HD camera I'd give it even more reason to buy it over a ipad mini.

A kid asking for an iPad and getting an Android tablet takes me back to my childhood when I asked for a Pong and got a Zonk. I was devastated lol.

For those young bucks here who don't know what I'm talking about, Pong was the 1st console out and the Zonk was a cheaper, similar but not as good "alternative"

I agree that for Christmas the parent doesn't have the flexibility to help the child make a decision. BUT, plent of kids wont get what they want for Christmas. I often didn't, but sometimes did - and I don't think I'm scarred because of it. It really depends on the situation - I see nothing wrong with buying the iPad Mini, or buying an Android model.

Yeah, if you really wanted to get her a Nexus 7, you should've started the propaganda machine earlier. Now she's so looking forward to an iPad. (of course option #2 is that kids are idiots and don't know what they want so do whatever!)

The kinds of people who post on this board are the type who would give their mom a Linux laptop when she asked for a Macbook because "it's just as good", and give her a bunch of idealogical reasons that 99% of people don't care about.

She asked for an iPad. If you give her a cheap substitute, she's just going to focus on all the ways it's inferior to her friends' iPads.

If you take her comparison shopping and she decides she'd rather have something else, that's a different story. The key is that she's the one making the choice.

You're assuming that a ten year old definitely means an actual iPad by the word "iPad".

A 4 year old knows the difference between a ipad and android tablet, don't try and make out they don't know just cause you have a android bias.
