You're assuming that a ten year old definitely means an actual iPad by the word "iPad".

of course she means iPad. What ten year old girl says 'I want a nexus 10 because I love the contrast ratio and PPI'?

Sorry but android tablets are for nerds. The Kindle Fire and iPad are for the mainstream.

No kidding, from the comments here I'd expect to walk onto the bus in the morning and see a sky of apples staring back at me.

As the uncle of an 11 year old, I can assure you that kids of that age know the difference between a real Apple product and an Android imitation.

"Thank you for getting me the one you'd rather have instead of the one I asked for" -no wife, girlfriend, mother, or daughter ever

I agree with the get her what she asked for crowd. Now the question really is: mini or full size?

Yeah, if you really wanted to get her a Nexus 7, you should've started the propaganda machine earlier. Now she's so looking forward to an iPad. (of course option #2 is that kids are idiots and don't know what they want so do whatever!)

It's not really that hard to casually point out things that suck about the iPad, after enough time this should have the desired effect.

Why so negative? Why not the positive approach of "Oh look at that Nexus, so cool!" /next day "Man, I saw you can do this on a Nexus, so cool!" /repeat forever

Right, no better way to change someone's mind than by making snarky remarks about their device of choice.

My mom used to love her iPad. But after hammering away at her about how iPad can't run Cyanogen Mod, only has a dual-core processor, and isn't even based on open-source software, I think she finally realized that her opinion is wrong and mine is right.

My daughter is wanting an iPad for Christmas and I'm not sure I want to spend that kind of money on it. Would the Kindle Fire be a better option? By the way, she is 10.

I've split this off from the old Kindle thread so that it gets the attention it deserves

if she wants ipad id get her ipad. kids are really sensitive to brands, they want what their friends have, and thats probably apple

Ideally you would do both for maximum effect.

Right, no better way to change someone's mind than by making snarky remarks about their device of choice.

Kids are very susceptible to marketing so it's more likely that they want a device for no good reason at all rather than actually preferring it based on features or capabilities.

I suppose you applaud people for every bad decision they make simply because it was their choice?

I just bought a used kindle fire for my gf and her son for xmas. It was $80 with a case. I've rooted it and installed jellybean and it should fit their needs perfectly.

Explain to me how a 10 year old girl will get more benefit out of a $400 ipad than she will out of an $80 android tablet?

Not to mention the fact that she doesn't understand the cost of an ipad when she asks for one. IMO that gift is far too expensive for someone her age, and by indulging her, you are not helping her understand the value of money. When she's 16 and asks for a car, are you going to buy her one of those too?

Yep a used Kindle Fire. Might as well shit in a box and wrap that.

And my kids (7 and 11) understand the cost, well mostly the 11yo.

But seriously, not even a good used tablet, but a Kindle? Wow.

lol. Damn, some spoiled kids on here. Go ahead, tell me how your 7 and 11 year olds would throw away a kindle fire because it's trash. It's in mint condition, but yeah they'd know the difference, and no kid of yours is going to use a device touched by someone else! they might get the AIDS! And those ultra-performance android apps? Pssshh... better not run them on a 1Ghz dual core, your kids will hate you when angry birds takes an extra 20ms to load!!

Get real.

edit: Oh, never mind, you're one of "those" dads. Gotta make sure you give your kids everything they ask for. Enjoy your entitled kids in 10 years.

If she asked for an iPad and you are willing and able to get one then that's what you should get her.

You don't want to be "that" Dad.

BTW I have 2 girls. One 11 the other 7. The older one wants an iPad and of course the younger one wants what the older one does. :-(

Why is buying an iPad mini a bad decision? Is it because you don't agree with it?

Neither is a bad decision. The only bad decision is buying something based on someone else's preference/needs rather than for yourself.

Someone who's not tech savvy won't even use the Nexus 7 to it's full potential. I doubt many people even use widgets, heck I consider myself pretty tech savvy and I only use the clock widget and the toggle widgets for WiFi, Airplane mode etc. Everything else seems like a waste of space at least for me.

I have met maybe 2 other people in real life who actually flash ROMs or download stuff to customize the UI/functionality of their device. Most people don't mess around with the settings and keep their stuff stock just to avoid any potential issues.

When it comes to tablet apps or (apps in general imo) Apple stomps Android and that's what most people buy their tablets for nowadays. All tablets can be used for web browsing or reading but when it comes down to app selection you'll find the Android tablets lacking in quality and quantity.

Something to consider..everything on our iPods works. That isn't true of our Android devices, which includes a Nexus 7.

And iPad 3rd gen returb is on sale for $309 at GameStop.

? What do you mean everything on the iPods work and doesn't on Nexus 7?

Is that 3rd gen refurb at GameStop refurbished directly by Apple or by GameStop? I trust Apple refurb. I don't trust GameStop.

I ordered the 4th gen new iPad for the wife this morning from BestBuy. $440 plus 5% cash back from Chase Freedom. My wife is heavy user of FaceTime so the VGA crap camera on 3rd Gen is complete dealbreaker. I also ordered the 5th gen blue iPod Touch for my daughter. The new Touches are ripoff but if it will make my daughter happy, then it's worth it. Now I have to find a deal on the Mini for my daughter and I'm done with Apple for this year.

There are apps that don't work fully with all versions of Android. And the latest os update has some problems. Its not a big deal for a tech oriented person, but its more like Windows than it is like Apple's ecosystem, which doesn't have so many versions and devices to deal with.

You forget that this is happening with iOS now too, especially with big name apps. No platform is free from this. Obviously every platform has it to a different degree but iOS is definitely not given a pass on this when phones can't run Maps or Siri or has other big features left out of the latest OS update.

And you think this is Android only problem? It's been the same for iOS and is not something new. There are apps and games that don't work on iOS unless you update to the newest OS. And Apple OS updates are full of problems. I updated iPad1 to the newest OS due to app and game compatibility issue and it's practically unusable now. Browsing the web on Safari is slow and the browser force closes often. Same with other apps and games. I wish I could go back to iOS 4 but then many apps won't work due to iOS incompatibility and there's not a way to downgrade the firmware on iOS unless you jailbroke and saved the blobs previously. At least on Android, I can flash back to earlier firmware if I'm not happy with the new OS.

I'm posting my experience with iOS and Android with regards to use by my grandkids.

What apps that kids use don't work with iOS 4 ? I've never found one.

10 year old girl?

iPad. No question.
Give her what she wants, not what a bunch of 20 year old nerds think she should have.

Propaganda machine? Maybe his daughter has used both and know's what she wants. Sorry but I'd serious wonder about any non Apple hater who was offered eather for free. Then had a full day with each and still went with the Nexus. Mine you I mean a regular person not an AT/XDA uber nerd who gets a raging erection at the thought of a custom launcher + custom icons.

Average people care about stuff like quality apps and fun games they don't have to wait a year for as it's ported from another platform. Not widgets and a blinking notification LED you can customize.
