Christmas: Is it too early?

Before I get to deep into this, I want you all to know I love the Christmas holidays. I love the time with family, I love the religious aspects of it, basically everything that goes along with Christmas. However, there are some aspects that I do not like.....so I will share my thoughts and opinions today. I think we should have a huge AT discussion about this. NO CLIFFS TODAY FOLKS.

Today is November 9th, 2007. It is 82 degrees outside......and the grass is still green. I still run in my shorts and take my dog for walks.......I am enjoying BBQ's, outside stuff, work, etc......the furthest thing from my mind is Christmas.....until now. Why? Let me explain.

Today I turned on the radio....was flipping through and here is Dallas we have a station called 103.7 Lite FM (http://1037litefm.com/pages/82...pe=4&contentId=204262) - easy listening music. Sometimes they have great music on...sometimes they don't. However, to my surprise (and no telling how long this has been going on) I hear Christmas music. Again, today is 11/9/2007. To ask the question nicely.....How insane is this?

A few weeks (maybe a month or more) back I decided to build a new flower bed in the backyard for the Mrs. It certainly lacked color and I thought it would be nice. So I load my dog in the Jeep and drive to Lowes. I walk in the front door and see bag's of Rye grass, fertilizer......and right to the right of all of this, I see 6 employee's taking about an 1/8 of the building (just inside) and turning it into the "Christmas" section. This was back at the end of September going into October. They had lights, air decorations.....all the festive decorations you USED to find only weeks before Christmas. Now you can purchase all of this 3-4 months prior! How insane is this?

Wal-Mart - Meh.....they started the same routine as Lowes but only a week or two earlier. However, isn't Wal-Mart the type of store who doesn't allow their employee's to say Merry Christmas or Happy Holidays. I can certainly tell you a story that made me NEVER step foot in a Wal-Mart again. I am 24 now, but a few years back (maybe around 19-20) my family and I did the whole "salvation army bell ringer thing". This is something we did a couple of years prior. However, the last year we did this, is something I hope no one has to go through. Just week prior to what I am about to tell you had been nice, cool, casual days of ringing the bell. Felt great to be doing this with family. This particular day (and was our last day to be doing this anyways) was extremely cold and rainy..it was miserable! We were out there for about 4-5 hours (my mother with her sisters on one door) and my cousins, my brother and myself on the other. The manager of the store (which everyone in the town hated even before this) came out and demanded that 3 of the 4 of us leave because it was considered "loitering". He was extremely rude about it...but I calmy explained to him that we had been doing this for weeks and we had seen it done the same way by many others the same. He got extremely pissy and was persistent on interrupting me. Things got ugly and we got into a shouting match....where he proceeded to say he would call the cops and have me arrested. Remember, the last time I checked, salvation army bell ringers were "festive" type people and donated their time to do something extremely cool. As we were arguing.....many customers crowded around and begain to boo the manager - some saying they would never shop again. The manager began to threaten that I was "distrubing peoples shopping experience" and yadda yadda. To make a long story short, this made the papers (not the news for some reason) and the town was in an up-roar and wanted this manager gone. Today, 11/9/2007, he is still there.....but I am long gone. How insane is this?

Black Friday: Do I really need to go into this? How insane is this?

The Wal-Mart thing was more or less a rant, but back to subject here. Do you think we as a society start Christmas way too far in advance? September? Doesn't this kill the spirit for people when the actual holiday rolls around? Remember, I love Christmas.....it's my favorite time of the year....but I sadly see that possibly changing because the spirit is no longer there when the time comes around. After several month prior to of music, movies, shopping, decorations....when the time actually comes....im so sick of it all that (over the past year or two) my Christmas's (other than my religious beliefs) have been pretty crappy.

What about you? I would love to hear some rants, raves, opinions, etc. Let the discussion begin!

How insane is this?

How early is too early?

Am I being stupid about this?

Just shut up and start buying cheap crap you don't need. Sheesh. Get with the Christmas spirit.

Today is November 9th. There's already snow piled around from Tuesday's snowstorm, which knocked out power for a few thousand people and caused numerous accidents. Our white Christmas came early this year.

People rave against Christmas being too commercialized, but the fact is, people are stupid enough to buy into it, year after year. "Wah, wah, we don't want Christmas to start so early....oooh, look at the pretty lights! I'm going to buy them now!"
They do that, the stores take in money, and thus the early start is justified. The market hath spoken.

I don't know who shoved mistletoe up that Walmart manager's ass though, I thought they'd encourage that sort of thing, it's good PR. "Look at us, we support efforts to help the less fortunate."

But concerning retail, Christmas stuff starts arriving with the regular merchandise shipments sometime around August.
And having worked retail, that pretty much killed off any little remnants of "holiday spirit" that I had - which is about like killing off a possum that tried to cross an LA freeway. There's not much life there to begin with; killing it doesn't take much. I never was big on traditions and the like. Decorations just seem like a useless expenditure, a waste of electricity, and a waste of plastic.

Blame marketing companies. Christmas season used to start on Thanksgiving, now it starts on Halloween. In another 10 years it will start on Labor Day.

At least you have a choice to listen to the crap.

I have to listen to Christmas music for 8 hours a day.

I don't particularly care for Christmas but I love all of the sales leading up to it.

But yes, the stores start too early. Some of the stores around here began putting Christmas stuff out the beginning of October. It's crazy!

Yup, it's stupid, and I don't think there's anything we can do about it except convince our friends that it's stupid. Christmas in October didn't happen overnight, and this idiocracy isn't going away overnight either. You can try to fight them at the top, but the simple truth is that things are this way because it's profitable, apparantly our population has reached critical mass for Christmas idiots, so Christmas has become idiotic.

The stores have started music too?!?!?!?

Hell it was playing before Halloween. Not on the overhead, but we had a Christmas tree display that had it's volume loud enough where the overhead music was turned off and you could basically hear it through 75% of the store.

There are worse fates, but that would seriously make me consider a career change. I don't suppose you can get away with carrying an ipod around and only having one earbud in, can you

Nope. The first few weeks aren't that bad, but come late November/early December, you're on edge. A week before Christmas and you're about ready to burn the place down.

As for a career change, I get paid pretty well there, so it'll suffice until I graduate from college.

That's basically how I feel about driving a school bus, sometimes it's really irritating, but the pay is pretty good and it's not too bad overall. Still, looks like I'll have to do something else next year since my schedule only has room for about 12 hours of class with driving from 6:30-8:30 and 2-4:30

Christmas is fake happiness.

People these days have very sad regular lives and need more fake happiness to balance it out.

Yes - I think the whole Christmas thing is a joke the way American Society deals with it nowadays.

Dress up like Santa and shoot up the place. If enough do it, people will Fear XMas. Problem solved

Disclaimer: Don't do that.

"The Night Santa Went Crazy"

Down in the workshop all the elves were makin' toys
For the good Gentile girls and the good Gentile boys
When the boss busted in, nearly scared 'em half to death
Had a rifle in his hands and cheap whiskey on his breath
From his beard to his boots he was covered with ammo
Like a big fat drunk disgruntled Yuletide Rambo
And he smiled as he said with a twinkle in his eye,
"Merry Christmas to all - now you're all gonna die!"

The night Santa went crazy
The night St. Nick went insane
Realized he'd been gettin' a raw deal
Something finally must have snapped in his brain

Well, the workshop is gone now, he decided to bomb it
Everywhere you'll find pieces of Cupid and Comet
And he tied up his helpers and he held the elves hostage
And he ground up poor Rudolph into reindeer sausage
He got Dancer and Prancer with an old German Luger
And he slashed up Dasher just like Freddy Krueger
And he picked up a flamethrower and he barbequed Blitzen
And he took a big bite and said, "It tastes just like chicken!"

The night Santa went crazy
The night Kris Kringle went nuts
Now you can't hardly walk around the North Pole
Without steppin' in reindeer guts

There's the National Guard and the F.B.I.
There's a van from the Eyewitness News
And helicopters circlin' 'round in the sky
And the bullets are flyin', the body count's risin'
And everyone's dyin' to know, oh Santa, why?
My my my my my my
You used to be such a jolly guy

Yes, Virginia, now Santa's doin' time
In a federal prison for his infamous crime
Hey, little friend, now don't you cry no more tears
He'll be out with good behavior in 700 more years
But now Vixen's in therapy and Donner's still nervous
And the elves all got jobs working for the postal service
And they say Mrs. Clause, she's on the phone every night
With her lawyer negotiating the movie rights

They're talkin' bout - the night Santa went crazy
The night St. Nicholas flipped
Broke his back for some milk and cookies
Sounds to me like he was tired of gettin' gypped

Wo, the night Santa went crazy
The night St. Nick went insane
Realized he's gettin' a raw deal
Something finally must have snapped in his brain
Wo, something finally must have snapped in his brain
Tell ya, something finally must have snapped... in his brain

Grrr - it seems like every other Christmas son on the radio is a love song. I would rather be single on Valentine's day than from Thanksgiving to December 26th.

It gets worse every year. All of the major online retailers serving the UK already had a Xmas theme kicking off about a week ago, the TV ads were the same

I hate Xmas.
