Personally I like the Thanksgiving holiday better as I grew older. With Thanksgiving I enjoy getting together with family and sharing what?s happened over the last year and not worrying about the entire gift giving, materialistic, rush of Christmas.

To be honest I'm almost relieved after Christmas day.

On a positive note online shopping has most defiantly helped ease the Christmas shopping experience.

I put our Christmas lights up yesterday, then again my GF's son in law just got home from Iraq and leaves in two weeks for Hawaii until January and she wanted him to see the red white and blue light scheme I created last year in his honor (when he was getting shot at and blown up on a daily basis).

Why say no? I'll buy my decorations in January if I see them on sale for cheap. You say I'm 11.5 months early? Well, I'm going to use them eventually anyways.

Think of the benefits of a longer holiday shopping season. I can buy my gifts now and avoid the inevitable craziness that will come the closer we get to christmas. Stores might make more sales, which is generally good for the economy. And I like it when people at the office get into the holiday mood. They're usually easier going, less stressed, and more pleasant. And the amount of work that needs to be done usually slows down... I say let's start this thing earlier!

The way I see it, people saying "Oh noes!! My neighbors are putting up lights too early!!" are just looking for something to complain about.

Craft stores and home improvement stores can certainly have artificial trees and ribbons to buy, but why do grocery stores need to have Christmas trees in the aisles on October 27th? (one my local stores did).
I have trained my kids to turn their heads from anything related to Christmas prior to Thanksgiving. What do retailers expect? That we will be EXCITED about Christmas for seven weeks? Unlikely. Instead, if we frequent their stores, we are more likely to just be sick of Christmas before it even arrives. But they don't care about that, as long as they get our money first.
Well, I do want to be excited for Christmas when it arrives, so I just don't shop at stores that have decorations up so early. But it's not just enough to stay away. I wrote emails to two of my local grocery stores. I thanked one for waiting to put up decorations and said they have my business for all of November. I chastized the other for having theirs up so early, and told them they lost my business for all of November. I encourage readers of this forum to do the same! Retailers are obviously motivated because they think decorating so early will encourage us to spend. If we spread the message that they are achieving the opposite end, they'll change their strategies eventually!
