Chrome, and sending data back to Google

So I finally installed Chrome since I found an extension in Disconnect that supposedly blocks data from being sent to all kinds of sources. Chrome is fast and I want to stick with it.

1) Does Disconnect really work as advertised? I saw Lifehacker said it was one of the best.

2) In Incognito mode, Disconnect does not appear enabled (no icon), and cannot be installed separately. The message on the incognito opening screen says it doesn't keep cookies, etc. but everything else stays the same (data sending as with default Chrome). So wouldn't I be safer in normal mode with Disconnect? Or am I missing something?

3) Unrelated: none of the extensions work for incognito and cannot be installed.

Don't use Google search in incognito, or otherwise. If you're concerned about tracking, that's one of the main ways they track you. I like DuckDuckGo, but if you want pure Google results, StartPage is good.

Using extensions in Incognito can leak private data, and isn't practical to allow on a general basis.

You have to manually enable extensions if you want them running in Incognito mode

Settings > Extensions > Find the addon and click the checkbox next to "Allow in Incognito"

If you want to disable services in Chrome that talk back to Google,

Settings > Show Advanced Settings > Uncheck everything in the Privacy section.

Have you tried Iron Browser from SRware?

http://www.srware.net/en/software_srware_iron.php

Basically it's Chrome, but without the personally-identifying information:

https://github.com/nylira/prism-break/issues/169

From here...

There's also some question about Iron's motives for existing. It's been said that it was created to drive ad dollars to the dev.

Motives of software devs should be taken into account when selecting software, and you can never really know what's bundled with proprietary software.

Iron is nothing but an attempt at grabbing ad revenue by spreading FUD

There's always Chromium builds themselves
