Been using Pale Moon myself...haven't done any tests but it feels a bit snappier than FF, and it basically IS FF.

I like Chrome as a browser because it's faster than FF and uses less memory and has 1 process per tab, but I hate all the cloud BS. Last I tried it, it wanted me to sign in to Google account just so I can use bookmarks. I uninstalled it.

How do you disable the new Touch Optimized interface? It's awful!

That is what i see on my PC this morning. It's not only the main Menu that is affected but also Bookmarks within folders and Right-Click context menus too.

There is an option in chrome://flags but it doesn't seem to do anything:

Edit: Found a solution:

Go to the properties of your chrome shortcut and at the end of the target line add a space then --disable-new-menu-style

Thanks for posting this. The flags didnt work for me either.

The new interface was really annoying, it nearly doubled the size of all the menus!

Yeah it really blows to have all of your bookmarks span multiple devices.....

I did a test on that. I opened five tabs in FF and Chrome (same tabs). Adding all the processes showed Chrome using almost double the memory of FF.

Leave em running for a few days though. FF starts to use multiple GB's of memory if left open for a while. Unless they fixed that, have not really noticed in a while since I have 12GB of ram now. When I had 3.5GB of ram I'd start to get memory errors if I left it open too long.

Wrong.

I left my firefox open for months with no issues.

I've never had Firefox use multiple GB. The most I've seen is ~1.5GB, and that's with many tabs open. I'm currently using 588MB with 22 tabs open, and about 24 hours up time.

Red Squirrel, I have not noticed this. It could have more to do with what is on the tabs left open, or what add-ons you are using, than the program itself.

Oh BTW, Google is forking WebKit.

Linus Upson, vice president of Engineering at Google, and Alex Komoroske, product manager on the Open Web Platform team, told us that the costs of sharing code now outweighed the advantages.

Google's only open as long as it benefits them.

By that they mean having the same codebase for two separate projects was becoming difficult. Webkit is LGPL, so "Blink" should be open-source too.

Some of it is BSD, so portions could be locked up. I do think the parts they're forking are lgpl though. I need to look into that.

Chromium or Iron is so much better without Googles crap built into it, yet apart from that is the same, dunno why you guys use Chrome.

and Iron is just Chromium but with ads thrown in. Don't know why you'd recommend that.

I use opera but the past two releases have crashed allot using flash.

I don't use chrome because I don't agree with a company that has no customer service.

I don't use Firefox because everyone does and I like to be different.

I heard that opera was changing to be more similar to chrome though, not sure how, but maybe it will become more stable.

Best comparison review I'd say is on Toms.

can't imagine why it would be recommended over Chrome:hmm:
http://www.srware.net/en/software_srware_iron_chrome_vs_iron.php

Well, I was referring to having it as an option at all if Chromium is available.

So let's use their "differences" as a listing of Chromes privacy issues then.

Installation-ID - Chromium itself doesn't have this. So of course, Iron doesn't. Is it really a privacy issue? Srware themselves says it's deleted after the first update and it's used for measuring number of successful installs.

Suggest and Alternate Error Pages - Both options that can be disabled in Chrome settings if you so wish.

Error Reporting - Not even enabled by default in Chrome and such a feature exists in most other browsers.

RLZ-Tracking - Does not even exist in official Chrome releases. It's only included in promotional Chrome releases like the ones bundled in software. RLZ metrics is also open-source.

Google Updater - aka Omaha Updater. Also open-source.

As for URL-Tracker, here's what one Chromium dev says about it;

Furthermore, the "URL tracking" mentioned both on IRC and on the Iron website refers to the GoogleURLTracker class. This unforutnately-named class figures out whether to use google.com or google.es for searches from the URL bar, and does not in any way do any sort of spyware URL monitoring. This is obvious to anyone who can read code, and should be obvious to anyone technical enough to produce a product like Iron. At this point I can't believe they're doing anything other than being intentionally misleading.

http://neugierig.org/software/chromium/notes/2009/12/iron.html

SRWares site also seems to love using Google Analytics and Adsense. Guess they don't hate Google that much as long as they're making money off of them.

Oh and for being "open-source", their links to the source code don't even work and hasn't been updated in well over a year.

No need to get testy about it. You recommended Iron. I post why that recommendation is bogus for anyone who reads the thread. Simple.
