Have you ever tried running Photoshop over a remote desktop session? In my experience, complex operations over a network aren't easy or pleasant. Ripping is no problem (edit: though video viewing over remote desktop may be impossible); complex spreadsheets are debatable.
I'm not even sure you can get a desktop set up without a monitor, KB, and mouse, to initially activate it.
99.9% of them. There's usually a couple key combinations that are reserved by the client for the RD application. They're chosen to be as purposefully weird as possible to so there's no conflict, but if your desktop application uses those keyboard shortcuts, you're SOL.
There's also usually a menu command to send a ctrl-alt-del.
And on a Mac that's remoted into another mac using Apple's RD, pretty much everything is passed to the networked machine (including the force-quit command) except for the keyboard shortcut that logs a user out. I forget that sometimes. Oops.
Remote desktop works great for opening software and setting up settings remotely by helpdesk and support staff. However, running software is not something it is good at. Basically a chromebook is a lightweight wireless low-end laptop. I would look at it like a wireless tablet with a keyboard. They are priced well. Some tablets are like $400. So for what it is it is a bargain. I could not exactly figure out what kind of processors they have. I dont think they even have an i-3. It is some kind of 3rd party processor.
I suggest you look at some of the support issues first:
Does Google's RD work that way? I was under the impression that it requires an internet connection and that even with both computers on the same LAN everything goes through the internet. Is that not correct?
Is this $500 including OS? To use actual Remote Desktop, you need Windows 7/8 Pro, which is $140 right there leaving you with $360 for the rest of the machine. While you can certainly build a machine for that amount of money, you're not going to get something tremendously powerful. I'm thinking that an Optiplex from the Dell Outlet would be the way to go.
