The success of General Motors Corp's. popular employee-pricing program, which boosted sales by 47% in June, is forcing rivals Ford Motor Co. and the Chrysler Group to match that offer.

Ford did so Tuesday and Chrysler plans to officially do it today. GM said Tuesday it was extending its program, which allows consumers to buy most 2005 vehicles at the same low price employees pay, until Aug. 1.

Maybe I'm a complete idiot (possible), but I just don't understand the "employee discount" programs that car manufacturers are running.

If someone could, please explain to me the difference between "Everyone gets the employee discount" and "These cars are on sale". Don't both statements mean less expensive cars?

It's like saying "pre-owned" when they mean "used".

I'm not trying to thread crap, I'm just a little confused.

I think they are all owning themselves by showing the consumer how low they can go on the prices......who is going to buy at the normal price now when they go back up??

This is not a rant or a thread crap...just a casual observation.

It seem that our whole economy is based on horribly inflated prices on horribly inflated automobiles/SUVs/pickups...then doing a re-fi at artificially low interest rates in order to pay for our folly/impulsiveness.

I call this "bootstrap economics".

Kinda lame that they exclude all of their decent cars, including all SRT models. I've had my eye on a SRT-4 for months and got all excited.

I just bought a Jeep Liberty yesterday for 3% below invoice, decent trade, and 0% financing for 5 years.

Well, it will hurt the moral or ego for sure, but it definitely beat losing your job due to plant closure.

I think all these employee discount crap is to buy them time before they get their redesigned models in, those old craps don't sell well and they are stuck with them.

I think the difference between this and a sale, is that it seems designed to reduce the variation in price and deals. Just having a fixed low price makes it easier for people to buy, rather than having to haggle to get a good deal.

It is important to realize that this isn't hurting the dealer or manufacturers' bottom line its affecting the salesmen. They are now being given a set commission on every car instead of the floating one they get normally. That's why you have to haggle with the salesman you're changing his percentage. This now limits them to $500 a car or so instead of the regular $2000 or more. The dealer and manufacturer are still getting thier share.

Actually I do not see what was changed. Accordingly carsdirect all crossfire including SRT were sold under invoice, so telling about employee discount just made it more official, but actual price you pay wasn't changed.

Yeah, working for minum wage or a $100 commision per car can feed anyones family.
as far a job security-selling cars there are alot of them you should try it yourself.

I wonder if they exclude certain vehicles from their employess, when it was just them getting the employee dicount on the cars. Man the chrysler 300 would have been an option if this employee discount was available for it, but unfortunately not. They shouldn't call this an employee discount for everyone, but just an incredible sale on select vehicles. I think GM has it on all their cars but just 2. Chrysler has half of its fleet misssing if I'm not wrong. Well hope all you get the vehicle you want for a great price.

my local chevy dealership sold 225 vehicles during June with an average of 1400 profit on each one. Biggest month in their 52 year history.

No Chrysler 300, no sale for me. I'd probably get in on a 300 during the sale if they'd sell it, but if they're not, screw this.

I was looking at a Caravan for my wife before this "special" pricing hit. Carsdirect.com had the base model for $15,502 with $2,500 cash rebate. Now, it is a $2,000 rebate and the Dodge site shows the same price (but Cars direct is $300 more). I don't see much of a change unless a dealer can do better...like GM this is just for people who don't want to dicker on the sticker....
