Circuit City, Best Buy NEVER EVER EVER gets my business unless they have an EXCELLENT deal that you just cannot pass up.

I would have said Best Buy 6 months ago, but now I'm undecided. I've realized that the people who work at best buy (at the store closest to me) have absolutely no knowledge about the products they try to sell. It's amazing really.

CC since they don't charge you a 15% restocking fee on any returned items. BB does.

Of course you made his day, that's a $600 camera, the commission check he'll get is probably $90

As somebody who has worked a job earning commission, and somebody who currently earns tips, I'm a fairly strong believer in pay-for-performance, so I'm more than happy to help out a salesperson at Circuit City (or Radio Shack, or Audio King, etc.). Since Best Buy does not pay its salespeople for performance, I'm inclined to shop at CC and give someone a chance to earn my business first. Plus, I really like that the line never gets long at Circuit city when you're ready to check out. I hate waiting in line. As humor writer David Sedaris once said, "waiting in a [long] line makes [people] feel like they're not living in a democratic society."

In fact, I cut a check-out line at Target tonight, 5 minutes before close, and I feel damn special for being so sly.

Both suck, but lately I've tended toward CC because BB is run by a bunch of commissionless buffoons and they have the ABSOLUTE SLOWEST checkout lines (KMart is pretty close, though). At least with a commissioned sales force, CC stores actually have people at hand who are willing to help you instead of you standing in the store with your thumb up your @ss if you need something from that storage shelf near the ceiling.

Best Buy. Damned if I'll let some clueless thug get commission from my purchase. Plus I've had better experience with BB's customer service.

So you'd rather your dollars go towards stock holders and CEOs?

I'd rather a few bucks of my purchase go towards the commision for a local guy, than get funneled directly our of town.

So let's see...

The same product, at the same price, at both stores. Store A makes me wait endless hours just trying to find someone interested enough to help me, then I have to wait another half hour at least in a check out line, but I can play with their stuff and not get bothered. Store B has salesmen that are clingy, but instant help and virtually no waiting at check out.

I'll play at store A, and buy at B, thank you very much.

I rather deal with a commission sales staff than having the BB staff constantly bothering me to join Netflix or MSN or a extended warranty on a 30$ item.

I think the lines are long at BB because they try and sell the extended policy on damn near everything. Sometimes, if it is a newer checker, they sit and try to talk you into it even if you say no. I think the more experienced checkers have learned to be more passive. But still, people do buy and then you have to wait while they fill out the form on the screen. Also, BB tries to sell in-store credit and the cashiers have to set that up at the cash register as well, which takes time. They guy who just wants a DVD gets screwed.

The last time I went into a Beast Buy I happened to pickup a 50 pk. of CD-Rs. While browsing the DVD section, a Blueshirt comes up to me, looks in my carry basket, sees the CD-Rs and asks, "will you be using those to burn music?". I told her, politely, to bite me and she wandered off.

There's always something about Beast Buy that keeps me coming back for more.

dont think anyone gets commission if i buy it online with express in-store pickup.... I already know what i want...
Correct.

I just asked a friend (who's brother works at CC) and he said someone ALWAYS gets a commission, regardless if they helped you or not.
Incorrect. The hourly associates/CSA's make commission only on service plans. Also express pickup is no commission.

Of course you made his day, that's a $600 camera, the commission check he'll get is probably $90
Not even close. $16.80 if he is full time, $13.44 if he is part time. If he bought service, that would probably make him another $20. And 10% on all accessories.

Several years ago CC was a good company, but I believe they were bought out and it really sucks now compared to then.
Never happened.

In all, I'd rather go a store where I will be overly helped than ignored. CC employees get paid on commission, and get paid more than BB employees. There is a reason we get more money. We aren't idiots like them.

Just because you work there doesn't make everyone at CC total genius'. Weren't you the one b1tching about your dumb co-worker and something AMD? Just like I'm not going to say everyone at Staples is a genius. I hate walking into CC because I get ignored 9 / 10 times I go there - just a couple of dumb @$$es standing around talking to each other. That and the atmosphere in there sucks. I walk into a BB and I at least get helped by a person, knowledgeable or not. That's not true at every store - we all know that, but you saying "We aren't idiots like them" is totally 100% untrue.

what never happened? CC was never a good company?

actually, like a decade ago, they used to be pretty top notch. i dunno what happened over the course of the years, but they are just now trying to "catch" up again. its a shame. we need more competitors to BB. frys sorta is....just for electronics. DVDs, and music is a no brainer for BB.

allow me to also add that CC is pretty good for new dvd releases. they are typically a dollar less than BB. not much, but if you have friends that are into penny pinching, being able to say you got suchandsuch for $15.99 vs $16.99 might be worth something.

Frys has to be the worst place I've ever shopped. It's big but that's the only thing going for it. One of their sales guys told my friend who was shopping for a new computer that e-Machines is the top of the line computer - better than any HP, Compaq, Dell, Gateway, etc.

CC because I don't want the profits going to CEO's that have their thumbs stuck up their @$$ like BB's. Plus the BB around here has horrible employee's....of course thats because of their low wages and non commission, they just don't care to work.

That coworker it hourly. He used to be commissioned in computers, but he was an idiot so he got thrown into the CD department. My statement is true for the CC in my area...the people in my dept. are actually all very knowledgeable(except in 3D graphics, but they are old and don't play games so its understandable), and everyone at the BB near me is an idiot.

No, they were never 'bought out'...however they had a new CEO, who took the company down somewhat...but he is gone now, Allan McCollough is the CEO now, and he is turning things around. We were only down for a year or two, and we are gaining on BB quickly. The new CC stores are incredible, they make the old store I work in and the nice new BB down the street look like total dumps. And BB is following our lead, dropping majors...we will overtake them.

true here too... and BB people are pretty much morons but the CC staff is kinda like a Used car lot except with better merchandice. Also the no stocking fee and %110 pricematch I used a couple times I'm still with CC.

you sound like a very hard and enthusiastic employee. thats great. you make good managerial material.

also, its a change to have someone actually TRY to defend what they believe in with some tangible info. not just the "my stuff is better than yours." sorta deal.
