I'm a student at Purdue University and working with several Cisco 2600 routers that are having some serious problems. I know this is a bit more advanced stuff than how to simply network two computers together, but if someone has any pointers, or can lead me to another website/forum that may be able to help more, I'd appreciate it!

Here is a document that has all of the errors I am receiving.

c2600.rtf - routing errors

Thanks for you time/suggestions/help!

looks like your router does not have enough memory to run that software. I'll look into it more but in the very first few lines you'll see that the router doesn't have enough memory.

I'd suggest calling the Cisco support center immediately - those routers a very sick and need some TLC.

<edit> also noticed you're running 11.3 software. Not sure but don't think 2600s can run the older versions of 11.3.

I mentioned this to a coworker and he thinks you're right. He said the 2600's need something like 12.0(5) to operate correctly. Call your service center SOON!

main question here is did it work before??? Or did some YAHOO think it was a good idea to change IOS on ya!

A little background would help but just from skimming over your output of the boot messages I'd say the IOS is way too big to run with your RAM. IOS comes in many different flavors and many different memory requirements. So don't try to load enterprise software on a router with very little ram (your case) if all you need to do is route IP traffic. If all you need to do is route IP frames then all you need is IP software - that is the smalles IOS (memory wise) you can use.

WOW!!! just saw that your routers only have 16 MB memory. You need to upgrade.

<ps> how is old gold/black? tell spafford he's stuck in the 60s. Graduated 1993, stayed in wiley for two years and lived across the street from TA toms. Does the union still have a decent arcade????????? Can't tell you how many times I was busted for skateboarding on campus - see a lot of those marks on the CS building bench and the MSEE rails? Those are mine.

Went through you posted page on your boot errors - you need more RAM. A 2600 with 16MB is basicaly useless. You'll need at least 32 MB, more if you wanna use bloated enterprise software.

Looking at the document one of your routers has 40Mb of ram but can't load it's image from flash. To get one router running try moving the ram from the 40mb model into the 16Mb model which is running out of ram. That way you may get one box running. For the 40Mb box currently, check too see that you have flash installed. If you do then you'll need to get an new image on there.

Well, a bit of background....

I'm currently a teaching assistant for this class, it's focused on wide area networking and telecommunications. I'm trying to get these five routers up and running so the students can use them, but I myself have limited background with the guts of cisco ios.

So I guess what happened is that someone tried loading a new image to simply play around with it, couldn't get it to work, so they just set the routers in the corner and didn't tell anyone. SO I guess main problem is I need more memory, and the 40 MB router has no image. The problem with that router is that I never even got a ROMMON prompt. Hrmm...

AS FOR PURDUE: I'm enjoying myself. I'm a senior in the school of technology. I lived in McCutcheon, then right across the street from Jake's for a year, now I'm right next to Triple XXX. As for TA Tom's THEY DONE TEARED IT DOWN! It's been gone for two years now, I think. The Union's arcade is alright, lotsa fighting games now, I'm more of a pinball buff, luckily they have 4 or 5 crammed in there.

Thanks for the help all!

just checked cisco IOS software center. You can run the IP only IOS11.3 with 4 MB flash and 16 RAM. My guess is you have desktop or enterprise on those routers.

About the only thing on CCNA dealing with switching is how many/what port configuration is in the 1900's, and the basics of VTP and STP.
