I don't mean to insult your intelligence, but this is really looking like a problem with the crossover cable. Can you verify it between two PC's?

First off, the 2900XL series is a 10/100 autosensing switch.

I need to know what exactly is the model? 2912XL, 2912 MF XL, 2942XL, 2924C XL, or the 2924M XL.

I also need you to console in and type 'sho ver' (without the quotes) and copy the first paragraph in your reply. (specifically looking for version number and version type.

As for using this switch as hub, it can be done, you just need to enable portfast spanning. And I also concur that the problem is likely a bad cable. If the port works directly connected to a PC then the problem is the cable.

Why do you disagree with the bad cable answer. The port itself is fine as it works in stratight through mode, it does not when crossed over (the port doesnt know the difference as long as it get the correct voltage on the right pin).

You wouldn't happen to be Cisco Certified would you? I work for the company, I know what to look for and such. Thus one of the reasons that I need to know what model it is.

Anybody overlook the possiblity that there was a duplex mismatch between the 4000 and the 2900? If so the 4000 could very well have disabled the port.

Check ports on the 4000 with "show port"...look for ports in a "errdisable" state. Also, make sure you know what port on the 4000 your pluggin into so you can run some debug/logging commands.

do a "show port x/y" on the 4000 where x/y is the port your attaching to and post here. Do a show run on the 2900 and post.

Also. DO NOT ENABLE PORTFAST on the switch ports your linking together. You run the risk of burping your spanning tree.

<edit> whoops, you've already attached a PC to the port and you get link. Port can't be errdisabled. Must be physical layer (cable). You've tried autosensing both sides and forcing both sides??? Model number would help.

seconding the cable thing.

if he plugs it into his PC and gets a link, then it's straight-thru. Thats the obvious problem with THAT cable. It may be that even when he uses an x-over it's dead too though. But the link from the switch to the PC without a shadow of a doubt proves that the cable is straight-through.

raju: and the light on the 2924 when plugged into the port on the cat 4k via x-ver doesn't even turn yellow?

Do you have a pre-made (i.e. storebought) crossover cable? just walk the 2924 up to the switch and try a little short thing like that.

I *NEVER* trust home made cables EVER unless I have a cable tester that knows how to test x-over cables. So many people I know think they know the pinout of x-over but really do not.

Cisco TAC will help, but I bet the warranty has expired on that switch. So you might have to buy a SmartNet contract (category 2) for that item. Find a reseller and try not to get ripped. Cisco encourages SmartNet sales through their resellers. I've even bought SmartNets for DOA Cisco products that have been on the shelf (at TechData for instance) so long that the factory warranty expired. That was my previous life at a Cisco VAR...

i'm with ya candyman. I didn't notice he had the 2931 gig module until I reread.

Post a copy of "show version" on the 2900. This is imperative to proceed. You may have a software bug related to the gig module.

no problem. We've all banged our heads with cable problems.

Lesson learned?

If it looks like a cabling problem or physical layer issue, immediately test the cable or swap out with a known good cable.

If you have access to privileged mode, do a "write erase" otherwise do a password recovery/change and then do a write erase. Search Cisco's website for the password recovery procedure.
