cisco ata-186 / vonage configuration

I just got vonage and it comes with a cisco ata-186. Unfortunately the usage guide is super general. I'm wondering if anyone else has had experience installing one of these. Do they require DHCP to be enabled? Do they need specific ports forwarded? (this really should be covered in the manual, but for some bizarre reason, isn't).

alright, well it seems to want a dhcp server, which is a huge PITA for me. I want to use the IVR, but when I try to access the menu the voice says "a-s-s-w-d". Is that like password or something? I didn't see anything that mentioned a default password in the manual. I can't seem to get past this cryptic message. All related docs indicate that you just follow the voice prompts. WTF is asswd?

bastards @ vonage enabled a password as part of the default configuration. I will kill them. how am I going to manually assign the bloody IP???!!!

*bah*. even when I enabled dhcp the thing doesn't want to get an IP because the router's subnet is 255.255.255.128 in lieu of the usual 255.255.255.0. Using winroute I can get the thing an IP, but the whole setup seems to have issues because of the differing subnets. Password protection is ghetto. If I could manually assign the subnet on the actual device, my troubles would be over. Now it looks like I'll have to get an additional router just to properlly route packets from the .128 router. Hopefully that will resolve the issue, or else I'll have to change the subnet on the original beast (which is going to be a big problem). *ack*

sounds like if I reset it I'll be able to manually configure the ata 186 and reconnect to vonage:here

I don't think I would do that but if your on a router all you ready need to do is plug it into the router if your running nat but you do need a router to use it I got a linksys . just look on the links and it will tell you all about it it is easy to setup it took me less then a min.

yeah, no I got the router, it was a problem with dhcp not operating with subnets other than the default .0 (mine is .128 and changing it to 0 would be a monumental challenge because there are a substantial number of other inaccessable devices connected to it). Anywho, I bit the bullet and bought a stupid $15 dlink router w/dhcp. works no problem. (although the number of routers connected to this lan is starting to get ludicrious)

Still it's f*cking stupid that vonage prevents you from manually assigning an ip address (something the device obviously supports).

quality is sweet though. sounds better than my last landline.
