Cisco guys... need some help...

Ok I have a Aironet 1200 that I am going to throw outside the firewall. I've been told that this AP will act as a DHCP server, tho I have not been able to get it to do it. (I didn't think it would work, but they say it will)

Here's what I've been doing.

Via the web interface
Reset the system, let it come up on the network.
I input the dns servers
I change the IP address to static and define the router

Via Console
I put the AP outside the network.
Login
enable
config t
ip dhcp pool 0 (I've tried 1 as well)
network 192.168.0.0 /24
default-router (the address)

The AP is still not assigning IP addresses. The card is seeing the AP, but not getting the IP addy.

Can someone help?

Bascially, what my goal is... is to use 1 public IP, and let dhcp assign out 192 addresses. Just like a home router or whatever. They say this can be done, so now I'm stumped.

So, you want to have the AP do NAT? That is what it sounds like. If so the AP is purely a L2 device and will no do any sort of routing or NAT. Also, what I have seen from Cisco, the AP will not support any sort of DHCP server.

It's not even an L2 device, it acts as a hub. However, it WILL do DHCP, which must be configured from the command line.

I don't have the specifics available right now, but I know it's b een asked and (correctly) answered on the Cisco NetPro fourm.

The setup for DHCP is the same as for a router, command-wise.

If I get a chance, I'll find it and post it ... otherwise, check out the NetPro forum.


I believe you need to assign the DHCP pool to an interface to get it to issue addresses, all you've done is define the pool parameters.

Since you are putting this outside the firewall have you set the firewall up to do bootprelaying (directing dhcp traffic to the Aironet)?

ScottMac, is that an unsupported feature? I have worked with the 1200 APs before and I have not seen the option and I also checked the commands to see if it was supported. I did not see them in there and I know from experince that there are commands in the APs IOS that is not listed.

Ok, I was looking under the 1200 series APs. I was not looking under the 1100s. The 1200s do not have any of those commands listed so that is why I said that it probably would not work.

What kind of firewall are you refering to? Obviusly having the AP do the DHCP is out of the question do to its imitations, but either way, you should have somethign else act as a DHCP server. Perhaps if the firewall has router abilities or is indeed just a router with a bunch of ACLs, setup a make-shift DMZ and have the interface provide the DHCP, or just let DHCP through to a DHCP server.

Well from reading scotmacs Cisco link two thing are blatantly obvious number one the DHCP on the 1100 only allows 20 IP addreses. and two why in the world would you want to put an AP outside of the firewall?

set your SNM higher
