Looks like a pretty good deal. You need to link a Citibank EZ Checking account to the savings account, however, to partake in this. Here's the fine print:

* To qualify for Free Citibank® EZ Checking, you must apply online for both a new regular checking and e-Savings Account in the EZ Checking package by 12/31/2006. Your relationship package will then be free of monthly maintenance fees and per-check fees. Charges for other account-related services may apply. All accounts are subject to approval. Offer only available for first-time Citibank checking/deposit account customers, and is valid only once for any individual.

As for the $200 EZ Checking deal, here are the terms:

Terms and Conditions:

? You must open and fund online a Regular Checking account in the Citibank EZ Checking pricing package and deposit at least $1,500 by 7/31/2006.

? Starting no later than the calendar month after the month in which your account is opened, pay 2 or more bills each calendar month for 3 consecutive months at citibankonline.com and receive $50.

? If you qualify to receive the initial $50 credit and you continue to make 2 or more bill payments each calendar month for the next 3 months you will receive another $50. This can continue for up to 12 months from account opening. A maximum of $200 will be credited to your account. If at anytime during the 12 months you do not pay 2 bills within a month, you will no longer be eligible for any additional $50 credit(s). Each $50 will be credited to your account within 90 days of the end of the statement period in which you've satisfied each of the requirements stated above.

? Account must be in good standing at the time of each of the $50 credits. Offer only available for first-time Citibank checking/deposit account customers, and will be paid only once to any individual. Non US residents and persons under 18 years of age are not eligible. Offer may be modified or withdrawn at any time without notice and is not transferable.

So it takes a year of paying bills online to get $200.

The 5% rate isn't bad at all though.

I've created both of these accounts for the free iPod mini some time back. I used the bill pay to pay of my credit cards, one of them being a linked citi card. A rep told me that you can even pay yourself or family members any amount you like to qualify.

Very easy for me to set up the savings account since I already had a Citibank checking account. Thanks OP. This is better than the rate I'm getting at ING.

Darn I just opened an HSBC account. Anyone know if it would be worth moving over?
Citi does my credit card, and I'm taking out my student loans with them. Then they'd do all my financial things. Idea would be that when I go to apply for another student loan (without a cosigner, my mom is going to school full time and has no income now), they would see that I've got some money in their e-Savings account [shows I'm wiser than most with my money, plus *they* have my money], and that I charge and payoff my credit card every month [not going into debt with credit card]. I'm thinking if they saw all that they'd be more likely to give me a student loan (without having a cosigner) than if they didn't. Can anyone confirm/deny this? Of course there's also the fact that they're offering a few tenths of a percent more than HSBC is.

The thing I hate about getting a Citibank bank account is that they grill you. It's like you are trying to get money from them instead of giving money to them.

Can you walk into a Citibank and withdraw/deposit money? Are they going to fee you to death?

Citibank has financial centers in certain area but not mine. They do however have ATMs in all if not most 7-11s! I think you can mail checks to them but I use another account to cash checks to - of course one can always transfer that money.
