I can't get away from my grid mentality... Everything is perfect city blocks. No wasted space. Freaking SimCity has programmed me too well!

I am trying to use circular patterns but grid is so much easier.
I need to learn the nuances of the road placement etc.

I'm far from perfect when it comes to road placement, but I've learned how to place the curved roads pretty well. Basically, you start by clicking where you want the road to start (at another road, for example). Then, the first drag will be the angle at which you start the road, and how far it goes out will be how far the road will be straight before the curve. It isn't an exact science, as it will curve before the distance you brought it out. Then you get to configure the final placement of the road, it will show the final product. I haven't quite figured out the difference between the curved road and free-form yet.

The curved tool, you basically make 1 curve, in 3 click - start, curve point, end

The free-form tool, allows you to continue to make what ever you want, click start, point, curve, point straight point, straight, point, another curve

or another way is the curve tool is one piece, the free-form, you can make many pieces
at least thats how I view it

One thing I am still tying to figure out is how to raise the happiness of the commercial.
I can get Office, Residential and Industrial all up but cant for the life of me figure out commercial.
Got parks, fire, police, hospital, garbage, death, all good coverage, Subway to some, buses.

Trying to get the 95% happiness achievement

My first map was spaghetti. The on and off road ramps for highways takes a little to figure out and the highways only going in one direction, so you have to make sure you also build a highway going the opposite direction on the other end.

This game is crack. Think I'm even ready to shell out some $ for DLC if it's decent, and I don't do DLC.

I'm thinking of getting either this or SC4 + Rush Hour + mods. Which do you think is a better simulation?

Also, does Cities: Skylines have missions or just sandbox?

i think Cities Skylines engine is better, but SC4 is more polished, both are excellent. SC4 with mods and rush hour I have played probably 1000 hours or more over like a decade+

I have only 1 week playing maybe a dozen or so hours with Cities:Skyline ... They have different strategies and different challenges.

Sim City was more polished, yes, but it also ran poorly.

As for DLC, the publisher says its going to be pumping out free content with patches and make it intolerable for pirates to keep up.

"our plan for pirates is to make a great game even better through free updates - making it more convenient to use Steam instead.""It's all about offering the superior service," he added. "That's how we bring down piracy. By making the paid experience a superior one."

Pirates are scum, and I wish for more success for titles such as these. I was actually more worried Maxis and EA wouldnt file lawsuit for ripping off the game.

Really looks like it could have potential, but I'm likely to hold off until moves to GOG a year or so down the line.

Not going to Pirate it, but I just have too damn many games in my backlog to even worry about and DRM nonsense at this point.

Which DRM nonsense is this game making you worry about? I must have missed it.

Overhead. All 9 tiles unlocked/purchased, still have 3 largely unused. Madness.

You can follow planes (and flying rats).

You can do custom parks in game, green spaces galore. Pedestrian paths are not only pretty, but extremely useful as Cims will use them whenever possible.

No terraforming in game (yet?), however there is a full map editor with easy to use tools and most of the game is open to modding so likely eventually. And thanks!

Loving all the screenshots! (I refuse to post mine due to ugliness -- not just my video card, but the city itself.)

I woke up at 4am this morning and had to play. Sadly, I made some poor decisions and I think destroyed my city beyond repair. Need to start a new one which is a blessing and a curse.

Steam.

I think I also read something about Offline functionality not working?
Might be confusing this with another game, but Steam, no Tunnels (yet), and all the forthcomimg DLC (which are likely to be packaged in a "Gold" Edition) are enough to cause me to put this on hold for now.

Back to the game, it sounds like it'll be highly Mod-able, which should be good.

They mentioned you could increase the Tile size or number of Tiles to a certain point through Modding.

I'm wondering if you'll be able to remove the 1 Million Pop cap through Modding ?
Not sure I'd ever be able to even hit that or if the current gen of PC's could handle that at this point, but it'll be something to look into.

I actually have a lot of questions about the game in comparison to SimCity 4, but I haven't had the time to really dig into it that far.

But like I said, it looks intriguing and something to put on my future wishlist for now.

After playing for a while over the weekend .. I see a lot of shortcomings when it comes to highways/ramps, there are no 2 lane ramps or 3 lane ramps, highways currently cant be 8 or 10 or 12 lanes, NAM is MUCH more expansive for SC4.

One other complaint, the support pillars for the highways, they are kinda picky/finicky. Would be better if they could be dynamically moved when placing something under highway...

Still, this game is a lot less annoying then using NAM for ramps. And a lot more expansive than SC4 base game for highways.

I want to see wider/more lane highways and bigger ramps and interchanges with multiple turn lanes... perhaps the design of the game will allow that for a future expansion or update, if not, I can live without....

Good game, certainly worth the price, a lot of great things, some room to improve.

You can use the 2 road one way for a two lane ramp but then your speed is restricted to half of the ramp. For a three lane exit just use the highway itself. With the path finding the way it is, more lanes doesn't always help though.

Hey, no need to shame. Had a 6 lane road merge onto a dual avenue in my industry sector. Failed many times making proper road junctions in this game. I love that we can also make our own mass transit routes, though I sometimes get lost when placing them around the city. I think its going to take me hours to "calm down" and focus on the details.

People still complain about Steam? I just see it as a digital content provider that saves me the trouble from going to the store and get harassed for 100 memberships and subscriptions from the pimply geek behind the counter.

Thanks, yea, I have used one way roads and highways, my issue is that the highway backs up with too many people wanting to exit, so I have added more exits, but, my map is like a spaghetti of ramps.

I am using highway or 1 way rd roundabouts on each side of the highway in some places, in others Ive raised the highway 1 level and have one roundabout below it, and in others I have raised the highway 2 levels with roundabout 1 level up with ramps to highway, and then grid below with ramps to the roundabout ..

I look forward to whatever patches/polish the devs are able to offer downstream. It was a solid launch, I havent come across any game breaking bugs, and its not crashed or had any performance trouble. I have modded to unlock 25 tiles, but my cities are not yet there, I tend to restart / new games every time my city gets to like 40-50K because it becomes too messy with spaghetti ramps.

My biggest issue is which roads to pick and placement.
I tried the underground rail line but didn't go so well

I wish you could visit other people's (friends?) cities. Like you could in SC.

While these screenshots are awesome to look at, I want to fly down/around your cities. See what makes them work (or not). Steal some ideas.

THAT is a functionality they need to bring to this game -- if you save your city in the Steam Cloud, then it should be able to be viewed/explored.

Steam.

LOL

I think I also read something about Offline functionality not working?

Wut? There's no online functionality, it's SP only

Might be confusing this with another game, but Steam, no Tunnels (yet), and all the forthcomimg DLC (which are likely to be packaged in a "Gold" Edition) are enough to cause me to put this on hold for now.

Tunnels are free in upcoming patch. DLC will be both free and paid. Your loss.

Back to the game, it sounds like it'll be highly Mod-able, which should be good.

It is, feel free to check out the Steam Workshop :awe:

They mentioned you could increase the Tile size or number of Tiles to a certain point through Modding.

Dude, so last week, already done.

I'm wondering if you'll be able to remove the 1 Million Pop cap through Modding ?

They said no, agent # is capped.

Not sure I'd ever be able to even hit that or if the current gen of PC's could handle that at this point, but it'll be something to look into.

Think that's the reason why it's capped. It's also going to be really difficult to get through the normal course of play, traffic issues compound very quickly.

I actually have a lot of questions about the game in comparison to SimCity 4, but I haven't had the time to really dig into it that far.

But like I said, it looks intriguing and something to put on my future wishlist for now.

Above responses in bold.

Here is mine after last weekend,

Cant get out of the grid layout too.

As for the squares, you can get 3x3 for a total of 9 at the moment, but some of the developers said that it can go upto 25 squares, but it might be performace issues

See above, there's already mods out that increase it to all 25 tiles. I'll give it a shot, but my city is barely past 100k CIMS and I've used up a majority of the 9 tiles available, so not sure how much performance hit I'll see (I'm assuming # agents has a greater performance impact than # of tiles).
