Anyone been playing this regularly? I just noticed there is a platinum version on steam for $4.50, and while I bought the 2011 version at some point, have never played it yet.

I've played CitiesXL 2012. It's the most generic, lukewarm, unexciting city-building game I've ever played, and it's crippled by technical problems that the devs have refused to fix for years now (awful single-threaded performance, memory leaks, and other performance issues). Don't bother.

If you're looking for a new city-builder to play, may I suggest the Anno series or Tropico series? Hell, the Tropico 4 Collector's Bundle is on sale for only $9.99 right now. Do yourself a favor and buy that one instead. Tropico 4 is awesome.

Honestly, Steam would be smart to put all of their city games on sale right now. This isn't a real picture (photoshopped), but it's very fitting.

The game is very poorly optimized, as dan said, but I hear that people with overclocked 2500k cpus or better, and with 8 gb of ram or more can play it without any hitches even when the city population reaches millions.

I dont think the devs can fix it, the original devs went belly up and the people who bought the franchise (focus home?) dont seem to have the necessary technical expertise to really solve anything. They just add new buildings.

Tropico 4 is fun, i jumped on the collectors edition yesterday and its been a blast. A guy called swixel made a mod to remove the population limit too which is great.

I've played the 2011 version a good bit. It's not as gripping as SimCity 4 was, but I did like some of it's mechanics. I also felt it had a bit better networking simulation than stock SC4. Oh, and fully curved roads way before SC5 But yea, the engine was kinda buggy despite looking good and even on my i5-2500k OC'ed to 4.6GHz it still chugged at times. I had hoped the new company that bought the game would redo the engine or at least fix some of the bugs because I really did like it, but I'm with Maximillian -- they just don't have the dev resources and the engine really does need to be redone from scratch. All-in-all, however, it's certainly worth $5 in my opinion.

Though I've never played any of the Tropico series, and I have next week off. Hrmm....
