Civ 4 or 5?

They are both on sale at Steam. I've read reviews that Civ 4 is a lot better in terms of less bugs and a lot better AI, but the updated graphics and orchestral music in Civ 5 seems like it would immerse me in the game better.

No . . . no, Civilization IV by a long shot. Civ5 was a vehicle for DLC and little redeeming qualities.

I bought Civ 5 and tried to play it recently, it was quite a downgrade from Civ 4, which was a downgrade / sidegrade from SMAC.

Civ 4 is much much better. As others have said, Civ 5 is very dumbed down, and the AI is not very bright.

Civ 4 is pretty much as good as it gets (unless you're old like me & prefer Civ 2).

Major gameplay changes in 5 just haven't been finished properly, it's almost like they gave up on the AI & even content with such a stripped down game & masses of almost pointless DLC.

I'm just going to say that I had more fun with Civ V than Civ IV. Not going to say it's 'better', just easier to have fun with when I played them. I'll try IV more though.

Civ 2 was awesome for its time. "its time" being the operative word. The visuals are dated and the gameplay mechanics pretty primitive compared to Civ 4. Civ 4 has borders, culture, civics, and a more robust combat model.

But I must have spent about 500 hours on Civ2 as a teenager. And probably 500 on Civ 1 as well

Civ 5 was OK at best. Watered down and unfinished. I like some of the concepts, and i really liked the hexes, but the execution was poor. It doesnt FEEL like a civ game.

Civ 4 is a fantastic culmination of all the previous Civ games. Still not perfect, but good.

I played the Civilization: Call to Power games back in the day, and they had some fantastic elements that i wish Civ proper would have implimented (combat being one of them).

Civ 5.... according to steam I spent almost 80 hours playing it. It's a fun game dont get me wrong but like others said its a dumbed down version of the game and I demand depth and complexity. I also dont like how the unit stacks are handled it makes it tedious to play and annoying when neutral AI armies block everything.

Furthermore, why do archers get to fire 2 hexes away why musketmen, riflemen even modern infantry need to strap on bayonets and charge melee style?

I keep forgetting that! Haven't tried "Colonization HD" yet. Always mean to try it but something gets in the way every time. Is it colonization just in the Civ4 engine? I'd be fine with that, just wondering if there are any changes

It definitely uses the same engine but the gameplay has been all changed to accommodate Colonization style play. First your towns can work special fields to harvest raw resources or they can be played in buildings like factories which for example produce cigars from tobacco.

Then the supply routes to transport resources between cities is another custom mechanic

The way you need certain goods to produce certain military units is another custom mechanic

The way the home city works where you can sail to it to trade goods, buy ships/military units is yet another custom mechanic.

So all in all it feels like a different game, it doesnt feel like your playing a mod on top of Civ 4
