Civ 4 vs Age of Empires 3

Now that I'm through with the Dawn of War expansion, I'm looking for another strategy title.

Both Civ 4 and AoE 3 have come out recently. Which is a better time? I know its turn-based vs real-time, but does one game offer more than the other? Which is more fun?

Do both games take getting used to, or can one just pick up and play better than the other?

Your opinions are appreciated!

I had experience with both AOE II and Civ III, so both were easy for me to pick up.

Overall, I felt that Civ IV is more fun, though I had fun with AOE III as well. Both are good buys, but it just depends what you want. A slower paced strategy game (Civ IV) or a faster paced one (AOE III). Which is "more fun" is almost entirely subjective. You have to ask yourself that question.

I'd most likely say the same thing, if I'd played AoE3. CivIV is a kickass game though.

Comparing the 2 is very difficult as they are totally different types of "Strategy" games.

I've spent the most time w/ RTS games, but I don't have anything against TBS, just haven't played them much. Based on what I have been hearing, Civ IV looks like it might be the better choice.

Is there much fighting in Civ IV, or is it more diplomacy and nation-building type stuff? If AOE III has more fighting, then it might appeal a little bit more to me.

It has alot of diplomica and nation building, but things get ense in Civ, especially if you make enmies early on.

There are many ways to win in CivIV, but you always need a good standing army. If you're up against someone like Ghengis kahn as a neighbor you can be pretty sure he'll get pissed of and invade eventually.
It's also a much more complex game, probably a much steeper learning curve.

I don't like the colonial setting in AOE3... _why_ do muskets only fire like a few feet? a musketman can't get a single shot at a cavelry unit before he gets destroyed. what's the point of having cannons and guns if they're just gonna behave like arrows from AOE2?

Well, what do you like more? Tactical RTS or strategic TBS?

Hello All
I am looking to try a strategy game for bascially the first time and I was thinking about trying out one of these

1) Dawn of War expansion
2) Civ 4
3) AoE 3
4) RomeTW

but I am totally lost as to which one I should try out first so I am hoping that someone here can point me into the right direction. I did try a RTS game long ago and I was totally lost as to what I was supposed to do and so there for I got my a$$ handed to me and I gave up

So here I am again and I would like to try one as they do seem like a lot of fun and they
probably takes some time in completing.

So what does this exactly mean? Well, what do you like more? Tactical RTS or strategic TBS?

I play all of the FPS and I love the Rainboe6 series and the Ghost Recon games to, I thought I would mention that as that might be helpful to you to see which RTS game I might like....Thanks for your input.

Regards,
CA

Just got back from compUSA and wow!! are there a lot to choose from

But anyhoo, the ones that looked really fun to play over there were:

Warhammer 40,000: Dawn of War & Rome Total War

so, are these good for a noobie to start on?

Omg dont shop at compusa youre supporting the devil!

WH40k is an awesome game... however the single player is VERY short youll beat it in 5 - 8 hours and the multiplayer is difficult because there is a very small population of players and the ones that still play have mostly been playing a long time and now theyre the master of that domain.
